  • Question
Where can I get a bat box?
    Community Answer
Feed stores, hardware stores, animal supplies stores and online are all possible places.
  • Question
Why shouldn't you place your bat box on a tree if it is supposed to be 15 feet above the ground?
    Community Answer
Most likely because it would be easy for rats, squirrels and snakes to access the bats.
  • Question
How can I successfully relocate a colony of bats?
    Community Answer
Hire a professional who can take them to a cave or other environment away from your home. I would not recommend trying to do this yourself.
  • Question
At what depth should I score the inside of my bat box?
    Community Answer
Make it two feet tall, have chambers at least 20 inches tall and 14 inches wide, and have a landing area extending below the entrance at least 3 to 6 inches.
  • Question
I bought an unfinished bat house. Should I use a paint, stain, or something else?
    Community Answer
Please leave the bat house as natural as possible as other products and chemicals may harm the bats.
  • Question
My bat house has been properly placed for longer than three years, yet we have no signs of bats. There is one bat that flies around our property, but has no interest in our bat house. Is there anything I can do?
    Community Answer
It's all about location. The house needs early-morning sun, and should be painted or stained a dark color. Do not place it in a tree. The internal temperature should be about 118 degrees; if that is not attainable, you might install a small solar-powered heater.
  • Question
Would a source of water, such as a birdbath, be recommended because it serves as a place to lay eggs for one of their primary food sources - mosquitoes?
    Community Answer
That is a good idea, but mosquitoes carry infectious diseases.
  • Question
The bats cleaned out the insects and left a couple of years ago. If I spread bat scat at the bottom of my bat house will it help draw them back?
    Community Answer
No, bats are not attracted to guano, they are attracted to certain areas because of the environment. Guano is only a sign that they are/or have been in the vicinity. The only time guano really plays a part in attracting bats to a certain area is when they are looking to build a large nesting area.
