The rule of thumb is that at bare minimum, you need a pile of kindling that's roughly the size of a VW Beetle and then double that. It's a lot of kindling. In a pinch, you can always throw some twigs or pine needles in the fire as it's going out to give yourself a few minutes to go and grab some more kindling.

You pour water over it, but don't just dump the whole bucket all at once. That's going to produce a ton of smoke. If you don't have water, soil or sand will work to smother the fire. Then, once it's out, poke it a few times with a stick or something to make sure the fire is totally out.

Can you pack musical instruments for the campfire during the trip? Which ones suit the setting?
    Community Answer
Yes, you can take instruments camping for playing around the campfire. Anything like acoustic guitars, ukuleles, a drum would work. Also small things like a harmonica, kazoo, whistle. Keep in mind that you are responsible for the instrument, so take care not to damage or lose it.

    Community Answer
Sure, you can pack musical instruments! Choose one that is small and lightweight, like a flute, recorder or harmonica. Guitars are a good camping instrument, as they can be used for singalongs. Keep in mind that most instruments are heavy and aren't a good choice as your goal is to pack light.
  • Question
    What instruments are lightweight?
    Community Answer
Acoustic guitars are lightweight, kazoos, and harmonicas. If none of those work for you, you can always download instrument apps.
  • Question

If you're tenting, bring foods that you can keep in a cooler or simply in a bag, never hike alone after dark, be aware of animals in the area, and put your tent on a flat spot.
