There are no fees for changing a Southwest flight, provided the new flight is the same price as (or cheaper) than the original flight. However, for a more expensive flight, you will have to pay the difference (this may include tax).

Flight credit will be good for up to a year from the purchase date of the original flight, and this has been extended (during the coronavirus pandemic) up to September 2021. So if you cancel a flight now (May 2020), you will be able to rebook it any time between now and September 2021.

Yes, if you cancel the flight in advance, you will get flight credit that is available for (as of May 2020) up to one year since the date you originally booked the flight (*not* one year from the flight date).
