It's recommended to have one to control ammonia and nitrite levels, as fiddler crab food often is eaten slowly and can affect water quality. Crabs and all other aquatic animals should have clean water in which to live. The filter does not have to be fancy; it can be a hang-on-the-back filter purchased from a pet store. The only thing to look out for is if you're using sand, as disturbed sand can clog some filters. Otherwise, there's nothing really different from normal aquarium filters.
