For Method 1, my computer doesn't register that the phone is connected. What do I do?

You're USB cable might be broken; also, some of the cheaper USB charging cables have issues working with a computer connection. Try replacing the USB cable with a better model, and if that doesn't help, bring in your phone and computer to a tech store to test if the micro USB port is broken.

But if your question is about mirroring your phone screen to your TV, yes, you can, using a compatible cable. Make sure that your phone supports output. My phone charger has a plug on the end, not a USB connection so how do I connect to PC? What sort of cable do I need to get (I need the type, not just "one with a USB on the end")?

It depends on the phone. If you have an Apple phone you probably need a lightning to USB a connector, or if you have a newer Samsung you probably need a USB C to USB A connector.
