Start your Minecraft server. Run Minecraft and join the server as "localhost." Open ports in your routers. Give the IP address to your friends so they can join the game. If your friends are in a local network, i.e. LAN, you can simply start a LAN game from Minecraft and your friends can join.

Download it off of the Minecraft website (after buying it of course), load up the game in your prefered version, and then you can either play single player or search up the IP to a server (such as hypixel.net) and play on that.
