  • Question
How thin does the yarn need to be?
    Community Answer
The size of the yarn isn't really important, but you should make sure that the yarn and the hook fit together nicely. When you gently lay the yarn in the hook, the yarn should sit just inside without "puffing" or "bulging" out beyond the "inside" of the hook. At the same time, the yarn should not make the inside of the hook look large.

  • Question

  • Question
My squares are becoming more "circle" than flat whats going wrong, what should I do?
    T. Chinsen
    Top Answerer
For most granny squares, a single chain space is set up for a group of three stitches in the nest row. With chunky yarns, there is not enough room and results in a more circular shape. Increase to a 2 chain space and a 4 chain space for the corners. This will help flatten and make the shape more square.
  • Question
It looks pretty hard to me but it must be easy, right?
    Community Answer
It is a little confusing when you first start, so don't be afraid to try, make mistakes and learn from them. You might want to watch some videos and follow along. Keep trying, it gets easier with practice! Also, if you can, have someone who can crochet help you to learn.
  • Question
I end up with a crinkly circle shape rather than a nice flat square. I'm not sure what 'turn your work' means, so this is possibly where I am going wrong?
    Community Answer
Turn your work mean to literally "turn the work." Like, if one side is in on the top, you would turn it until it's on the right side. Make sure you chain for the edges and feel free to start again if you make an error.
  • Question
How many squares do I need to crochet for a small blanket?
    Community Answer
It'll be different depending on how thick the yarn is, and how big your hook is. But, If you use worsted weight yarn, and a 5mm crochet hook, you might need around 60 squares for a lap sized blanket.
  • Question
How do I do my corners?
    Community Answer
It depends on the pattern of square, but if you do the standard one, when you get to what should be the corner, do the 3 double crochet stitches, chain 3, and do the double crochet stitches again in the same hole that you did the first 3.
  • Question
What would happen if you don't have the right tools and it did not turn out the way you wanted it to?
    Cecropia
    Community Answer
Even with the best tools, your first attempt likely won't turn out exactly how you envision it, and that's okay. If your issue is that your stitches are too loose, it's a good idea to switch to a smaller hook or a larger one if your stitches are too tight. If the issue is that the yarn is difficult to work with, try using a lighter color (to better see your stitches) or a smoother texture.
  • Question
I keep trying to follow this, but it keeps curling in on itself and never remains flat. Am I doing something wrong?
    Cecropia
    Community Answer
It may be that your stitches are too tight. Try to keep a slightly looser grip on your yarn and keep that consistent throughout. Additionally, you can use a technique called blocking to flatten your work when you've finished. This article is about blocking a blanket, but you can use it on any flat crochet project.
