    Expert Answer
Sadly, they rarely do. The idea is the dog associates an unpleasant noise (which only he can hear) with barking. Therefore, he stops barking to avoid the noise. However, barking is a noisy occupation anyway, and tends to drown out the ultrasonic collar. Either that, or the dog plain learns how to 'tune out' the ultrasonic noise.

Yes, and no. Provided the whistle is the right frequency and the dog doesn't have hearing difficulties, then he should hear the whistle. However, it's much like any training device in that it only works if the dog links the sound to a reward or to a desired action. If you blow on an ultrasonic whistle willy-nilly, then nothing much is going to happen.

    Expert Answer
Sadly, there's no simple answer to this one. The dog is your neighbor's property, and it's also their responsibility to stop the barking. If it's causing a nuisance, then alert the neighbor to the problem so that they can take steps to retrain the dog or block the view of the street that causes the dog to bark.

Who do you call to complain about a barking dog?

    Expert Answer
First speak to the dog's owner to alert them to the nuisance. It's only fair to give them a chance to remedy the situation. If this fails, then noise nuisance isn't usually a police matter, but should be reported to your county or municipality government.

Usually this would be covered by noise laws, but specific jurisdictions may have different laws, or laws that specifically apply to noisy animals. Do some research and then contact law enforcement if you have tried all other options.

First try talking to your neighbor, but this doesn't always help. Try physical barriers, like putting up a fence or planting thorny bushes. Try to remove anything that might be attracting the dog to the yard, like other dog's droppings, food, standing water, or fertilizers that contain animal products. You may also be able to get a cheap electronic scarecrow sprinkler that will spray the dog when it enters your yard!
  • Question
What if the neighbor's dog is a trained guard dog for something very legitimate. Should a complaint be made then?
    Community Answer
If the dog is trained well, it should only bark when a stranger steps onto the property. If the dog is barking willy-nilly at anything that goes by, yes, a complaint can be made.
  • Question
What can I do to stop my dog from barking all night?
    Community Answer
Put her in a crate far from your bed. If she isn't very destructive, fill a kong toy with her food and seal it off with cream cheese or peanut butter. Leave it there with her. She will be interested in it for a while, and hopefully fall asleep after or while she finishes it. Make sure she gets plenty of play during the day, and you might want to take her for a long walk or jog right before bed. Also, try not to let her nap for hours during the day.
  • Question
Please do NOT advise people to use anti-bark collars. Research shows that it causes much more long term behavior problems.
    Community Answer
I have used an anti-bark collar with my golden doodle. I love my golden doodle, I've raised him from a pup. I wouldn't do anything to hurt him. I put the setting on low and it does make a difference. We only put it on if he's just barking over and over again, and it's unstoppable. You just have to use it correctly and humanely. I educate people on this.

  • Question
My dog barks early in the morning and my neighbor started to complain. What should I do?
    Community Answer
Politely tell them that dogs bark and there's nothing humane that can be done to stop the barking.
  • Question
The neighbor is not in their apartment, and I don't know which unit the dog is in, but it barks 10 hours non-stop. Should I leave a note on the building's gate?
    Community Answer
That is one option, or you could call your landlord and tell them about the situation. They should know which tenants have dogs, and can probably take a good guess as to whose dog is the one barking. The landlord should be aware that one of their tenants is disturbing the peace for the rest of the building.
