  • Question
    Should the frog be alive?
    Community Answer
No. Either use chemicals to put it to sleep or get one that is already dead.
  • Question
    Where is the pancreas?
    Community Answer
The pancreas is usually located near the gall bladder, small intestine and the liver.
  • Question
Why do I need to pull up on the scissors when cutting open a frog?
    Community Answer
This is to prevent the scissors from accidentally cutting into the frog's internal organs.
  • Question
What if you are not supposed to give it any chemicals to make it unconscious?
    Community Answer
Almost all dissection animals, especially frogs, are killed before sale because it is not economical or practical to ship live animals. You should refuse to dissect a live animal because it is inhumane and dangerous to you (a live animal will squirm around as you cut it and may cause you to injure yourself with the scalpel).
  • Question
How do I dissect a live frog?
    Community Answer
You don't. Not only would it be difficult, but it would be extremely cruel.
  • Question
How do you cut the eyes out?
    Community Answer
Remove bones and parts of the head, then gently use tweezers to remove the eyes.
  • Question
Can you use scissors to cut through the frog?
    Community Answer
Yes, but be careful not to damage other body parts as that can get an inaccurate result.
  • Question
What are frogs put in to preserve their bodies before dissecting? What if a child ate the heart of a frog?
    Community Answer
They are put into formaldehyde, which is a known carcinogen. So if a child ate any sort of body part from a frog, check after ten to thirty minutes. If nothing happens, then he or she is probably okay. If not, then rush the child to the hospital.
  • Question
What are the tweezers used for?
    Community Answer
The tweezers (forceps) can hold/pull things back if you don't want to use your fingers.
  • Question
How do you know how the frog died and it's history?
    Community Answer
You could perform an autopsy, but unless it's obvious or you have a medical degree, you probably aren't going to learn much.
  • Question
    Why are frogs dissected?
    Community Answer
Because human anatomy and frog anatomy are somewhat similar, and to learn about the body's systems.
  • Question
What tools do I need to dissect a frog?
    Community Answer
Dissection tray, dissecting pins, scalpel or razor blade, tweezers, small scissors, latex or plastic gloves, cotton balls or napkin, and something to cover your work area such as plastic, newspaper or waxed paper.
  • Question
After removing the digestive track of a frog, what else can I remove?
    Community Answer
You can remove any parts you like, such as the heart, lungs, and bladder, as long as the teacher says you can.
  • Question
Why do people do this? This is cruel and cold.
    Matthew
    Community Answer
People dissect frogs because their bodies provide a good overview of the organ systems of a complex living thing. The organs present in a frog, and the way they are laid out in the body, are similar enough to humans that they teach the students how their body systems work. This is not cruel because the frogs are already dead and the frogs are humanely killed for dissection. However, there are software simulators you can use instead.
  • Question
Is it possible to dissect a live frog?
    Donagan
    Top Answerer
Yes, but it won't remain alive for long. It's much easier and more humane to dissect a frog that has recently died.
