Definitely think about where you're going to get your supplies when you do need them, for example, things like fuel or electricity. You're going to want to think about what could happen if something breaks. What's your backup? If you do drive to your location, you should probably have a backup of fuel in case you need to go to town for delivery service. I would also think about having a backup of food and backup ways to store cold food, for example, heavy-duty freezers that can keep your food cold for several days even if the power goes out.
  • Question
How can I do this if my family loves me most?
    Community Answer
You'll need to sit down with your family and explain to them your decision to live outside of society. You should consider having ways to communicate with your family (without electricity, you can still use mail, satellite phone, etc.) and may need to return and visit them with some regularity.
  • Question
Will this work if I am a minor?
    Community Answer
It can technically work, but it will be very difficult. On top of needing some money to buy survival essentials, your absence will probably also be noticed very quickly by your parents or guardians. After they notice, it probably won't be too long before they contact the police and start up search efforts.
  • Question
Where can I go in the UK without being found?
    Community Answer
There are many remote locations in the north of England, and also in northern Wales and in Scotland.
  • Question
Why finland is so hostile and makes people isolated from society without your own will?
    Community Answer
It may not be the case that the entire country of Finland is hostile, but that your local social and cultural environment makes it feel that way. Travel within the country (or internationally) and find a location that feels more welcoming and warm to you, or consider changing your social group to include more welcoming people.
  • Question
How can I drop out of society and join the Matis tribe in the Amazon jungle?
    Community Answer
It may not be possible to join the Matis tribe itself, but you can visit eastern Peru and western Brazil to experience the climate of the jungle there. Spend time hiking, camping, and backpacking (do so legally), and learn more about the culture before you attempt to contact any indigenous people.
  • Question
Must I buy land to build a house there (out of society)?
    Community Answer
It is a viable option, but not the only one. However, empty land usually costs around $3,000 per acre. Make sure you have the necessary funds. Tiny houses/mobile homes are also a good option, but you’ll still need to buy land to park it on. Try researching affordable but good ways to live away from society.
  • Question
How can I slowly slip away from society in order to make an easier transition from the people I love and will miss?
    Community Answer
Just start drifting away from them. Stop talking to them often, and slowly transition to not talking to them at all. You may want to leave a short but sweet message about your departure from society. Expect some resistance, but be strong in your choice. You can always visit your loved ones occasionally.
  • Question
How do I withdraw from society while living in the city?
    Community Answer
Don't watch the news, stay away from TV, social media, phone, car, WiFi, etc. Move away from a big city to a rural village, cultivate your own vegetables, get some fruit trees, spend free time in nature, walking etc.
  • Question
    Isn’t death the best solution?
    Torpi
    Top Answerer
No. If you feel like death is the only option for you, please call a suicide hotline and find a therapist or psychiatrist. The point of dropping out of society is to enjoy life "off the grid" - you can't do that if you're dead.
  • Question
Do I have to buy the land?
    Torpi
    Top Answerer
In the vast majority of places - yes, you will need to buy land if you want to build a house on it. While you could flaunt the law and hope nobody notices, you'd run the risk of being evicted and made homeless if authorities find your dwelling.
  • Question
    Will this work with kids?
    Markovich R.
    Community Answer
It won't work period, no man can just leave civilization. No exceptions. Dropping out of society might seem like a good way to avoid problems but it is just making new ones, which allow you to ignore old ones.
  • Question
Won't you still have to pay taxes?
    Torpi
    Top Answerer
Legally, yes (in some countries you don't have to pay most taxes if you have no income, but even then you'll have to pay sales tax or GST on anything you purchase).
  • Question
If you decide to live in the woods, who should you contact about buying land there?
    Torpi
    Top Answerer
Contact whoever owns the land, which you will need to research. Perhaps it is the property of the government, or a private landowner or farmer, or a corporation. Even if it is unused it could be owned by a tourist resort! No matter who owns it, you probably need permission from the local government to build there, and if you plan to use a septic tank/field or well instead of being on the "water system" then you're probably required to consult with an expert about this.
