I have an android 4.3. My keyboard has a smiley face emoji on it. usually when I press it all these different emojis come up. Now when I press the smiley face button all these other symbols come up for what I think are these ugly android emojis. What happened here? How do I get back the other emojis?

The way the characters look is determined by your system software. When you updated your Android, you updated to a newer version of emoji characters. This is controlled by Google, and there is no simple way to revert to previous characters.

That depends on what kind of update it is. If it is an update that changes what OS version you are on, for example an update from Android 10 to 11, it will change how your emojis look and/or add new ones. If it is, for example, a security update, then it will not give you new emojis and/or change them.
