    Expert Answer
If not cleaned up right away, the eggs can get into the soil and survive for months or even years. It may also be helpful to know how long it takes for the eggs in the stool to become infectious. For the commonest type of worm (Toxocara) it takes 10 to 21 days before the eggs become larvae and pose a health risk to humans. That is why it is important to clean up any animal feces in your yard as soon as possible.

Yes, but only certain wormers are safe to use in pregnant dogs. Fenbendazole is one option that has been proven safe. Worming daily with fenbendazole from day 40 of the pregnancy until two days after birth decreases the amount of larvae passed onto the developing pups and is therefore beneficial to them and you. Make sure that you ask your veterinarian for a wormer recommendation before administering anything.

    Expert Answer
Although on the fenbendazole packaging is says it treats tapeworm, it is only effective against a single species (Tenia) and does nothing to kill two other important species (Echinicoccus and dipyliddium). If your dog still has worms then it's likely she has a species not killed by fenbendazole and you need to use a product that specifically targets tapeworms.

Touching contaminated feces or soil can lead to an infection in humans. Most people don't show symptoms but become aware of infection because they spot worms in their stool. Less commonly some people experience a fever and develop a cough a few days after swallowing eggs. Of major concern is children who swallow eggs and then the larvae migrate to the back of the eye, causing blindness. If you are concerned about a child and roundworm then please see your physician.

When a dog has a low worm burden, this can be difficult to recognize. The signs are vague, such as a dull coat and the occasional stomach upset. The best way to know if your dog is clean or not is for your vet to examine a fecal sample.
