  • Question
Do I put grout between tiles on a roof?
    Community Answer
No, except in very specific areas - at a ridge at the top to stop windblown rain from entering, meeting points to different roof pitches or transition areas, along sidewalls to direct water out into the field, and at the very bottom or start of the roof to keep out bugs and birds.
  • Question
Does the old roof have to be taken off before putting on tiles?
    Community Answer
It may not be necessary, but it's best. A cleared roof deck allows any rotted wood to be found and replaced and is the best time to consider adding insulation that will pay you back in the long run. A new roof installed from scratch with all of the latest and greatest materials and methods will last the longest.
  • Question
Do the tiles need to lay on the roof for some time to acclimate?
    Community Answer
Not at all, as the tiles are fired or dried and should not warp.
  • Question
How is tile installed in the valleys of the roof?
    Community Answer
The tiles have to be cut , 2" overhang from up stand on valleys. It is best to ping a check line, then use a still saw to cut. Or, if you're not confident with that, then mark and cut as you go.
  • Question
Should concrete tiles overhang slightly on the gable end? Mine are fitted flush at the edge.
    Community Answer
The tiles should project past the edge of the gable end and should have an under cloak so that they can be pointed with mortar to seal the ends. Also, the ends of the battens should be slightly higher at the gable end to pitch the water back onto the roof tiles so that rainwater does not drip or run down the wall.
  • Question
Do tiles need to sit on the roof for a period time before installation to distribute their weight?
    Community Answer
N, as long as the roof was built to carry that much weight. Find an installation guide book for the area and style of tile you want. All the information you will need is available if you search your local building specification/codes office or online.
  • Question
How long can roof tile be stacked on a roof prior to them being layered?
    Community Answer
It doesn’t really matter but obviously it’s best to get them laid before bad weather/rain occurs and secure your new roof from leaks.
  • Question
Is it a good idea to use adhesive instead of nails?
    Community Answer
Adhesives can deteriorate over time due to exposure to the elements. So good quality nails would be better.
