  • Question
    Do voles eat strawberry plants?
    Community Answer
They do, sometimes. However, they prefer the roots of them. They dig tunnels underneath the plants and eat the roots. If you see grass dying, it may be a hint you have voles instead of moles.
  • Question
How can I protect tulip bulbs that I am planting from voles?
    Community Answer
You could intersperse with daffodils, hyacinths, onion, or garlic. These bulbs seem to be offensive to voles. Garlic cloves, moth balls, and cotton balls containing oil of peppermint or oil of eucalyptus placed in the tunnels will really irritate them, possibly enough to cause them to relocate to your neighbor's garden.
  • Question
What are voles doing when they make ruts in the grass?
    Community Answer
They are building "runways" so they can run through the grass with very little visibility! They use these to get from point A to point B safely.
  • Question
How do voles kill bushes and other plants?
    Community Answer
Voles eat the roots of a plant. The plant does not necessarily die quickly, but if you try to shift it (while weeding, transplanting, etc.) it will come straight out of the ground. They tend to eat smaller plants, as large bushes and thick trunks are too thick to gnaw through easily and do not provide the same nutrients. Voles prefer the bulbs of small plants above anything else.
  • Question
Can I use glue traps for voles?
    Community Answer
Yes. The traps just need to be in their pathways. Some find it inhumane to use glue traps, however.
  • Question
Why do they come in the house?
    Community Answer
Mainly to find food or shelter. Maybe there are other reasons, but those seem to be the most apparent.
  • Question
How do I eliminate voles in my asparagus garden?
    Community Answer
You should, if possible, place an Ultrasonic pest repeller near your garden.
