    Expert Answer
Small terrariums are going to be more inexpensive and a lower commitment. If you’ve never had a terrarium before, it’s also a good way to test out your ability to take care of it. Try a small one out at first.

Look for a small container made out of clear glass that has a flat bottom. A small vase works well, or you can use something shorter and wider.

You want to layer dirt and rocks to provide good drainage. Putting a layer of rocks over the dirt helps provide a little bit of a barrier so that your plants aren't sitting in too much water.
  • Question
Can I put springtails in a terrarium? If so, how can I find them?
    Mark O'Guin
    Community Answer
I imagine you could. In my area they can be found by turning over bricks and such in shady areas of the garden. They also leave relatively large egg capsules. If you wish to create a living mini woodland environment,it will require research, collecting materials, and constant maintenance/upkeep. I once kept salamanders in a partially planted terrarium for a few years and it required dedication to balance their needs with the needs of the plants and other organisms. The addition of any new insect or animal to a terrarium may lead to all kinds of unforeseen issues.
  • Question
Do you have to have a lid for your moss garden/terrarium?
    Nightmare Child
    Community Answer
The lid helps the moss retain moisture. If you’re planning not to have a lid, then make sure you keep it humid in there! You need a lid if you’re planning on keeping any animals, though.
