Experiment by making lots of test recordings, varying how you do things. This can improve results significantly. For $30, search "smartphone microphone" (if your phone has a mic input) and "smartphone tripod" for inexpensive options that won't be highest quality, but will improve results and give you experience in case you decide to invest more in the future.
