  • Question
How do I store homemade lemon flea spray?
    Community Answer
The vinegar in the recipe will help to keep the spray stable, so you don't have to refrigerate it. Store the spray in the pantry or cupboard, or in the fridge if you prefer.
  • Question
How much apple cider vinegar is added to the lemon mixture?
    Community Answer
3 lemons + 3 cups (711 ml) water + 1 ½ cups (356 ml) vinegar. So, for every 3 cups of water and 3 lemons, you need 1.5 cups of distilled white or apple cider vinegar.
  • Question
Can I use bottled lemon concentrate instead of boiling real lemons?
    Community Answer
Only if it's 100 percent lemon juice with nothing added. If it isn't, it won't be natural, and might harm your dog.
  • Question
Can you use lime instead of lemon?
    Community Answer
Yes, you can. Limes and lemons contain the same compound that deter and kill fleas. Grapefruits and oranges also contain D-limonene, so you could use those as well to make the flea spray.
  • Question
Can you use bottled lemon juice?
    Community Answer
No. The active ingredient in lemons that kills fleas is found in the rind, so straight lemon juice won't have the same effect. It's important to use fresh lemons and soak them in water to get the flea-killing benefits of citrus.
  • Question
Will lemon juice discolor my dog's coat if he is a black show dog?
    Community Answer
It should only affect your dog's fur if you blow dry his fur or he stays out in the sun for longer period of times within the first few hours of application.
  • Question
Do I have to shampoo my pet every day after I spray the lemon and vinegar mixture on it?
    Community Answer
    Yes, you do.
  • Question
Can I add black tea to the mix without worrying that it will leave stains on different things while spraying?
    Community Answer
Hard surfaces probably won't stain. Anything porous such as wood, cork or fabric probably will. As always spot check any new cleansers or treatments.
  • Question
Is this lemon flea spray mixture safe on cats?
    Community Answer
I have seen both "yes" and "definitely not" answers to this question, so would advise erring on the side of caution. The issue is that the substance that kills the fleas is derived from the rind, which can be toxic to both dogs and cats if ingested. You'd have to bathe your cat thoroughly after using the spray, which I can't imagine would be easy. Other natural repellents are rosemary and lavender which, in their plant form, are non-toxic to cats and other animals. Most importantly though, don't use essential oils on your pet as they are too concentrated and are potentially toxic. Use fresh or dried plants, only!
  • Question
If using 100% lemon concentrate, how much is needed for lemon flea spray?
    Community Answer
Lemon concentrate doesn't work, as the active ingredient in this spray is found in the rind of the lemon (or lime). The rind isn't in the lemon juice concentrate.
  • Question
Can I add lemon juice and vinegar together with Dawn soap and bathe my dog with it?
    Community Answer
No, that is not a good idea. The dish soap will remove your dog's natural oils, which is bad for their skin.
