If you want to make a yarn pom pom, cut a piece of cardboard into a CD shape, but with a bigger hole in the middle like a donut. Repeat this step with a second piece of cardboard. Then, sandwich the donuts together and thread the yarn through there.
  • Question
Can I use string instead of yarn?
    Community Answer
Yes. It may be a little harder to cut, but it will still work.
  • Question
Do I have to use cardboard?
    Community Answer
No, stiff paper could work, too, but don't use flimsy materials such as tissue or fabric.
  • Question
When I tried the cardboard pompom, I found it wouldn't cut properly and I wound it too tight. Will it still work if I wind it loosely?
    Michele
    Top Answerer
Yes. Just try to find the happy medium between too tight and too loose.
  • Question
How many times should I wrap the material to make a rug-sized pom pom?
    Community Answer
It depends on the size you want. If you want to make a big pom pom, be sure to wrap at least 100-150 times.
  • Question
What happens if I run out of yarn?
    Community Answer
If you have a small amount of yarn, then be sure to make a small pom pom, that way you won't run out.
  • Question
I can use crepe paper instead of tissue paper?
    Community Answer
Yes. The two are very similar, so they will both work well.
  • Question
If I want to make a big yarn pom pom, should my cardboard rings be bigger?
    Community Answer
Yes. The bigger the cardboard, the bigger the yarn pom pom will be.
  • Question
How do I wrap yarn around the doughnut form with only one free end of yarn?
    Community Answer
Pull out all the yarn you want before you start wrapping, and then drag the whole length through each time. Or, use the method with two toilet paper rolls instead of the discs, as it avoids that problem and makes it much easier to wrap more than one color at once, too.
  • Question
Is tissue paper the best choice?
    Kieyrafifi
    Community Answer
Kind of, because it comes in many colors and its material is suitable. But you can still find other fabrics suitable for pom poms.
  • Question
Can I use a metallic-color material to make a Pom?
    Community Answer
Of course, you can use any color you'd like!
  • Question
Does it matter how big the hole is in the middle when making a pom pom?
    Community Answer
The bigger the hole, the more you will have to wind it. But with a smaller hole, the fluffs will be much longer.
  • Question
Could I use thread instead of yarn?
    Community Answer
You could try, but you'd have a very flimsy pom pom, most likely.
  • Question
If I don't use the keyhole technique, will the pom pom still work right?
    Community Answer
Yes! Although it gets a bit tedious threading the whole of the wool through, it helps to get the amount of wool you want to use first, as the whole ball can't be used in this case. I use about 4-5 yards of wool, then I make a thin skein and push this through the hole for each winding. For about a 2" diameter outer circle I use a 3/4" diameter inner circle, this makes a pom pom about the size of a ping pong ball.
  • Question
Can I reuse the cardboard circle?
    Community Answer
Yes, you can. But, if you want clean, fresh pom poms each time, make a few and use new ones each time.
  • Question
Do I have to tie a piece of yarn in between the cardboard before I start making a pom pom?
    Community Answer
Yes, if you don't tie it before removing the discs, the pom-pom will fall apart, as the yarn will not be tied together.
  • Question
Does the tissue paper need to be a quadrilateral or can it be a random shape when making a pom pom?
    Community Answer
It can be any random shape you want it to be. I think it would be better rounded than quadrilateral.
  • Question
These steps say nothing about tying the yarn together before cutting it, so my pom-pom fell apart. Should I hold it and then tie it?
    Community Answer
Yes, hold it on the ring then tie it afterwards. Hold tightly so it doesn't fall apart.
