Not to pray them, but to have them blessed is a good and typical thing to do. Blessing the rosary beads allows them to become a Sacramental, which is a special outlet of graces instituted by the Church. But you can still pray the rosary on unblessed beads.

Shouldn't the Our Father beads be a different size/shape than the Hail Mary beads? I usually pray the Rosary in the dark (before bed), so I can't see color differences.

You´re right, they should be. Although most Rosaries do not have a size difference between the Our Father beads and the Hail Mary beads, I have owned and seen some with slightly larger Our Father beads.
