  • Question
I had St. Augustine sod put down last summer. It was fine and then turned to a straw-like color over the winter. There are a few green twigs coming back to life but I think it's dead.

If it is dead, this might be due to bugs. The southern law chinch bug has probably been feeding on the stems, this causes the straw colour and some patches to appear. Call back the company that laid the grass and ask them to rid the bugs and replant the grass.
  • Question
I had a contractor lay down the sod. After about a month I fertilized with a pink fertilizer. It killed the sod; now I have dead brown grass. What should I do before trying to lay more sod?

Give it a year to take hold. Grass/sod can appear dead but come back. Watering the dead sod more could help. Be sure your area is appropriate for sod as well. You might be in too dry a climate for grass and/or sod.
  • Question
Do I have to butt the sods together, or can I spread them apart for results?

You have to put them together. If you spread them apart, weeds will grow between sods.
