When and how do I use the points I get from the little tasks that are based on my Sims' moods and traits?

Go the the bottom and a little to the right. There, you'll see the icon of your sim's aspiration. Click on that, and it'll open up a tab. On the top right of the tab, there will be a little sign of a gift box. Click on it, and it'll open another tab filled with a lot of beneficial items for your sim. Hover over them to see what they do. Examples include "Gym Rat." which allows your Sim not to sweat during exercise permanently; "Steel Bladder," which slows your Sim's bladder need's decrease permanently; "Potion of Youth," which will reset your Sim at its current age, etc.

To get a child, you need to have two Sims with a high enough romantic relationship with each other (a male and a female). When they're around each other, click on a bed (the bed must be able to fit 2 sims), and select "Try For Baby." You might want to do this a couple of times to make sure the female gets pregnant. The pregnancy lasts for 3 Sim days.
