    Expert Answer
They can, but don't feed too many fruits and vegetables to your fish. It's easy to cause buoyancy, indigestion, and bloat issues. In general, a quality flake or pellet diet explicitly designed for goldfish can suffice. Goldfish need plant matter, but they also need protein and vitamins. They can get all of these from quality goldfish foods.
  • Question
What do I do if my goldfish keeps hitting its head against the wall?
    Community Answer
Consider that your goldfish might have parasites. Its behavior might be defined as flashing.
  • Question
Can I save the rest of the peas or lettuce in the fridge?
    Community Answer
Do NOT save food after it has been in tank water. It will start to ferment or grow bacteria - I got my whole tank sick once by using "saved peas." It is not worth the risk for a couple spoonfuls of food. Better to boil and shell peas, then freeze them in ice cube trays and thaw as needed. Make sure you thaw them, though. Don't drop ice cubes into your tank.
  • Question
Can I feed cucumber to my goldfish, and how long can I leave the cucumber in the tank?
    Community Answer
Yes, you can feed cucumber to your goldfish. A day at most, preferably not more than a few hours. I just chop it up and feed it tiny pieces so I don't have to worry about the water quality.
  • Question
What vegetables can goldfish eat raw?

  • Question
Is there any vegetable that I can give my goldfish that sinks? And how do I get them used to eating food that floats?
    Megan R
    Community Answer
Peas are vegetables that sink and goldfish usually love them, however I wouldn’t try to get your goldfish used to eating food that floats, as when they try to eat the floating food they will gulp air at the same time, which can lead to problems and illnesses later on.
  • Question
Can I give them uncooked broccoli?

No. The broccoli is not soft enough for the fish to chew. You need to soften it up first, and cooking it is the best way.
  • Question
Can I feed 7 goldfish a whole banana?
    Community Answer
That's a whole lot of banana! I guess if you've got 7 two-foot long Koi they might be able to handle it, but if you've got little tank fish, I'm gonna say that's way too much banana. Try this, the next time you are eating a banana, cut 7, 2mm slices (1/8 inch) and drop them in the tank.

Because they're too hard. Goldfish do have teeth like us, and the skin requires some biting and chewing that they are not capable of.
  • Question
Why does my new goldfish hate me?
    Megan R
    Community Answer
It probably doesn’t hate you; however, when a goldfish is introduced to a new tank it will be a very stressful time. Just be patient and give it a bit of time to settle in and it will soon start to like you.

  • Question
Can I feed mosquito larvae to common goldfish?
    Kreg
    Community Answer
You may use commercial fish food for feeding, but you can also feed "crunchies," dry mealworms or goldfish food as shown on the package to feed live mosquito larvae. You'll want to do some research first to determine the best fish food to use. Make sure to check the label. Some will say that the eggs may not hatch unless you feed live fish food. You should use enough food to cover at least the top third of the aquarium.
  • Question
How can I know the age of my local goldfish because one is smaller and the other one is bigger?
    Kreg
    Community Answer
The majority of male and female goldfish will grow to the same size. It is usually easiest to gauge their age by looking at their coloration. As a female grows older, the color of her scales will become more vibrant and gold. However, if your male goldfish is growing too slowly, their color will gradually dull, which signifies that they are young and should be encouraged to reproduce.
