In the event of a volcanic eruption in your immediate locale, there is very little that can be done to protect one's home. Closing and reinforcement (shutters etc) of all windows and doors will go some way toward preventing property damage from volcanic ash, though it is entirely possible that your house would be completely destroyed.

Think of it as your emergency pack, if you already have one and this is for your personal items, take important things, don’t make it too heavy though. Having on hand safety equipment is useful bring an extra pair of batteries, or take a bottle of water. Taking some non-electronic entertainment is useful, cards, board games etc., is recommended, as waiting can get very boring. Taking some items that mean a lot to you is nice, but don’t take too many. Take some money, your phone (spare phone if you have one), a mask, any spare keys to your house, car, etc. Finally, don’t be afraid to take extra clothing. Take clothing that covers as much of your skin as possible, taking something warm is also a lifesaver.
