    Expert Answer
Try to maintain constant ground cover. When one crop is harvested or cleared, plant another crop or cover crop immediately. Build crop rows across the contour of sloped land to slow water. Maintain a wild area (riparian buffer) around streams and rivers to protect banks. Use drip irrigation rather than sprinklers.

You could either build terraces to create flat growing spaces or build swales into the land to slow water as it runs downhill. Swales will collect the water and recharge ground water systems. Consider planting perennial species so there is no need to till the land.

Erosion leads to the loss of topsoil and critical nutrients. Over time this will reduce the food production capacity of the land.
  • Question
Why does soil degrade due to farming?
    Community Answer
Plants use nutrients from the soil to grow. The more plants there are, the more nutrients get used up. After a while, the soil loses its nutrients and becomes unusable. Since plants are the most effective way to hold soil together, over-farming can make erosion much worse. To prevent this, farmers can move plots each year so the land has time to recover, or switch to different crops each year that use different nutrients and add others back to the soil.
  • Question
How can I prevent soil erosion in an easy and simple way?
    Community Answer
Plant trees, protect forests, ensure that the soil holds suitable minerals or organic matter in the proper amounts, maintain the porous structure of the soil, control and reclaim ravines and shift cultivation around. As you can see, each of these topics is enormous in and of themselves, so this answer is merely a summary of what isn't necessarily an easy task. However, the more you take care of the soil and apply appropriate care habits to it, the more it will reward you by staying in place and improving in texture. You have to begin somewhere, so learn all that you can and start applying this knowledge today.
  • Question
How can I prevent soil erosion that is caused by wind?
    Community Answer
Use appropriate planting and top dressing. Depending on the kind of soil you have, perhaps get some more to mix in. Put wind breaks around the area, such as hedges, tree lines, fences, etc.
  • Question
How does building a retaining wall and terrace prevent soil erosion?
    Community Answer
They help in reducing the speed of running water, thus helping prevent soil from being carried away by the water.
  • Question
How do you grow plants in soil?
    Community Answer
The same way you always would depending on where you live and what the weather condition is. The back of the box or pouch the plants come in should tell you all the information you need.
  • Question
How can erosion change the texture of the soil?
    Community Answer
In addition to eroding the soil (moving it to another location), wind and water "weather" the soil, breaking it down into small particles of silt and sand. Since these blow away faster than large particles, erosion continues faster than before. Since heavier particles travel shorter distances, the soil is eventually "sorted" by particle size, leaving a coarse soil with few nutrients.
  • Question
What is the main cause for soil erosion?
    Community Answer
Water erosion and surface water runoff are problematic. One of the main causes of soil erosion is water erosion, which is the loss of topsoil due to water. Removal of vegetation is another cause or soil erosion and so is the removal of keystone species such as elephants from an area, when they are unable to fulfill their niche in the local ecology.
  • Question
How do I prevent soil compaction simply?
    Community Answer
Stick to walking paths as much as you can, and keep cars and other heavy machines off the soil. Stay off wet soil completely, since it compacts easily. If the soil is already compacted, you can aerate it .
  • Question
    What is soil erosion?
    Community Answer
The process of wearing away the topsoil by different agents like wind and water.
  • Question
What is the purpose of a raised plant bed?
    Community Answer
The walls of the bed prevent soil from eroding away when it rains. They also prevent soil compaction (since people do not walk on beds) and make it a little harder for weeds and pests to reach your plants.
  • Question
How do forests prevent soil erosion?
    Community Answer
Tree roots hold the soil together. The canopy slows down rainfall and other weather that can break apart soil. The leaves and underbrush prevents water runoff and traps soil arriving from other areas.
  • Question
What is the impact of soil erosion on human health?
    Community Answer
Erosion leads to dust storms, which cause respiratory problems and spread disease. Erosion also pollutes our water supply with soil and contaminants.
  • Question
    Can orange juice stop erosion?
    Community Answer
    No, it cannot stop erosion.
  • Question
Can you briefly explain how plants control soil erosion?
    Community Answer
Plant roots hold down the soil and keep it from washing away in the rain.
  • Question
How high do I need to keep blackberries on a slope to prevent erosion?
    Community Answer
Erosion can happen anywhere on the slope, but as long as water can't travel too far before hitting the blackberries, the plants will help. If blackberries won't grow on the hilltop (or you don't want them there), plant grass or other groundcover.
  • Question
    How do I stop erosion?
    Community Answer
By avoiding overheating and also by using better farming methods like contour farming.
  • Question
    What is soil conservation?
    Jen Yek-Cruda Bayarcal
    Community Answer
Soil conservation is the prevention of soil loss from erosion or reduced fertility caused by over-usage, acidification or other chemical soil contamination. It is also the practice of protecting the soil against erosion or deterioration.
  • Question
What are the factors responsible for soil erosion?
    Community Answer
Deforestation, soil texture, ground slope and intensity, and amount of rainfall.
  • Question
How do I prevent soil erosion by minimizing runoff?
    Community Answer
You can make an underground gutter. It is basically just a pipe underground that collects the water from soil and carries it somewhere else.
  • Question
What are the positive effects of soil erosion?
    Community Answer
A positive effect of soil erosion is that new soil will get scattered over dead soil and moisturize it.
  • Question
How can I stop erosion on a playground?
    Community Answer
    1. Create diversions to help drainage. 2. Build terraces. 3. Use erosion control blankets. 4. Plant grass and shrubs.
  • Question
Will trees and brush help stop soil erosion on a cliff?
    Community Answer
Yes, because the roots of the trees will help to hold the soil in place.
  • Question
What is the best ground cover for steep slopes when trying to prevent soil erosion?
    Community Answer
Mulch cover, because it covers soil all year round instead of for just a short time.
  • Question
    How does water cause erosion?
    Community Answer
Rainfall can cause erosion, both when rain hits the surface of the earth, called splash erosion, and when raindrops accumulate and flow like small streams. Floods, large floods, can cause erosion to happen very quickly acting like powerful rivers. Even trickling of water causes erosion over long periods of time.
  • Question
What's the easiest way to prevent soil erosion?
    Community Answer
One of the easiest and cheapest ways to prevent erosion is to plant shrubs and grass to hold it all and suck up the water. You can also lobby for your local government and others to protect forests, which help to prevent erosion on wider scale.
  • Question
How do I decrease soil erosion on a cliff?
    Community Answer
You can plant trees to prevent erosion on hillsides. You can also add shrubs and/or grass and other plants in free places.
  • Question
Which soil cover prevents the most soil erosion? Is it grass, mulch, or bare soil?
    Sasha Brown
    Community Answer
Mulch and grass is basically the same or used for the same purpose. Use grass as a thick mulch to prevent soil erosion. Overtime, it will breakdown to become fertile soil.
