This is probably due to over fertilizing. If a persimmon has too much nitrogen it will prematurely drop its fruit. Reduce fertilization and use a balanced fertilizer such as 10-10-10.

It isn’t too late, but don’t wait much longer! Avoid snipping off main branches that are already trellised. Prune branches sticking out horizontally from the wall and fasten smaller branches to the trellis. The best time to prune a persimmon is when the tree is dormant.

I've grown a plant since last year from a giant Fuyu seed and it's about 7 inches tall now. Should I keep transplanting it to larger pots for a couple of years? And when should I put it in the ground?

Try potting it up for another year or two but if you do want to plant it, be sure to put some protection around it so it doesn't get squashed or eaten if you have squirrels, possums or other critters who might be tempted by a delicate plant.

How should I trim/prune a very productive, adult persimmon tree that has been neglected for 4-5 years?

Absolutely, that is the best way to foster better fruit production and help the tree to get back to its former self. By following he advice above, I aggressively pruned 1 of my trees about 10 to 15 years old and now do we have a crop to pick! I didn't mulch or water it at all, yet it is bearing a heavy crop that is now ready to pick.
