Can I stain the cabinet rather than using latex paint?

If it is a laminate cabinet, then staining would not be recommended as there is particle board under the laminate, which lacks the wood grains needed to bring out the stain colors. Basically you'd still end up with a painted look, but it would absorb unevenly and look very odd. That being said, you could use stain on top of your paint to give it an antiquated appearance.
