It really isn't a good idea. Acrylic is a pretty tough product and the adhesive is basically a type of cement. I'd recommend getting them removed at a nail salon so that a professional can take them off, if possible.

I wouldn't recommend it. Since gel polish is made of the material as the gel nails, anything that breaks down the polish will begin to disintegrate the nail as well.

  • Question
How long do I wait before polishing?
    Abby Richter
    Community Answer
You should wash your hands after you remove the nail polish with the nail polish remover so you don't have any chemicals on your hands. Then pat your hands dry and put on lotion to keep them soft. Once you have done that, you can put on nail polish whenever you want after that.
  • Question
Can I also use a peel-off base coat to get it off?
    Community Answer
It depends. If you use the peel off base coat in advance, then you could. But, if you use it as nail polish remover, as in you put it on top of polish and try to rub it off, it won't work.
  • Question
I want to get the polish off but I'm too scared that it's going to loosen the nail since I did the acrylics at home instead of at a nail salon. What can I do?
    Community Answer
Use a cotton bud with nail varnish remover on it to wipe off the polish. As long as you are gentle and your whole nail doesn't get dipped in nail varnish remover it should be fine.

  • Question
I just got my nails done and it’s fake nails. I just hate the color and I got gel so I’m scared to use nail polish to remove it.
    Becca
    Community Answer
Your best bet in removing the colour is to use an acetone free nail polish, a nail file and/or buffer. Firstly take the nail file and gently file the polish until it becomes textured and most of it has come off, being careful not to damage the nail. Then buff the nails, after filing and buffing most of polish and top coat off, remove the rest of the polish with acetone-free nail polish remover (it has to be acetone-free if you don't want to melt the plastic and damage the extension). Then once all the polish is gone and your nails are clean and dry, you can paint and decorate them however you choose.
  • Question
Should I use acetone nail polish remover to remove polish from acrylic nails?

No, it is best to use an acetone-free polish remover as acetone melts plastic, hence why it is used to remove acrylic or press-on nails.
  • Question
How do I get shellac off my acrylics?
    Nannahow
    Community Answer
Most nail polish removers are made with acetone, which is the same ingredient used to strip off acrylics. Therefore, using non-acetone remover is a good option for regular nail polish. However, gel polish is difficult to remove without acetone, so you will need to use a nail file to remove gel polish.
