Hair damage rarely penetrates below the scalp. This means that even severely damaged hair usually has healthy roots and new growth will be healthy.

You can't actually fix breakage, but if you use regular protein treatments you can prevent additional breakage. Protein treatments are temporary but they do reinforce the hair's structural integrity. Perform weekly for best results.

  • Question
How do I know if I need to cut of my dead ends?
    Community Answer
If the ends are very dry or split, you should cut them. It's also good to cut them every 6 months no matter what, to maintain healthy hair.
  • Question
Is it better for me to have my hair in a ponytail or in a braid?
    Community Answer
Place it in a braid, for sure. You won't get the so called "pony tail bump" or the breakage you get from the elastic at the mid section of your hair if you put it in a loose braid with only a small elastic at the end.
  • Question
What could be the cause of damaged or frizzy hair as a teen?
    Community Answer
Using too much heat or brushing from the roots are often causes of frizzy hair. You could be washing your hair too often and it is becoming frizzy from dryness. If doing any of these things, stop now. And be sure to use a good quality hair conditioner.
  • Question
Why is my hair damaged if I only wash my hair twice a week?
    Community Answer
It could be because of the shampoo and conditioner you are using. Ingredients such as silicons and sulfates can lead to dry hair. It could can also be related to your diet, stress levels, or the way you style your hair (ie: heat styling, dyeing, etc).
  • Question
My hair doesn't grow fast. What can I use to make it grow fast and how can I stop my hair from falling.
    Community Answer
Trim it every 6 months, no earlier. If you trim more than this, you don't get the length you're looking for. Also, using coconut oil on your scalp or any oils will help grow hair faster. You can also massage your scalp with warm oil on it and then will help. Taking a biotin supplement every day is fantastic for growing hair out and for keeping it in good health.
  • Question
Is it better for damaged hair to tie it or braid it?
    Community Answer
Neither. Don't tie or braid it, just wear it down. It'll help your hair grow a little faster. You might also consider a trim, to help remove the worst of the damage.
  • Question
How can I repair hair that is breaking off at the roots?
    Community Answer
Ask your stylist to add layers to your hair as this will remove split ends towards the top of your roots.
  • Question
How do I prevent too much frizz and dryness and help my hair to grow? I get split ends 2-3 days after a trim.
    Community Answer
This is probably because your ends are fragile. Buy creams and shampoos meant for strengthening hair, and perhaps wear a hair net to bed or braid your hair in long-lasting hairstyles.
  • Question
How can I regrow my hair where it was lost?
    Community Answer
It would depend on the cause of your hair loss, but since there isn't really anything you can do to increase the growth rate of your hair, patience is probably going to be the best thing you can utilize.
  • Question
If I slept overnight with coconut oil in my hair, would it help hydrate my hair?
    Community Answer
Leave it in for an hour or two, then rinse it out. A whole night would make little difference.
  • Question
I put lemon juice on my hair trying to lighten it, but now it's gone all dark and damaged and it looks greasy even once I've just washed it. What do I do?
    Community Answer
Just follow the advice here and it will get better over time. If it looks greasy after washing, you can try shampooing extra-thoroughly (or shampooing twice) next time you wash it, or try a more intense clarifying/detoxifying shampoo. And always be sure to rinse out shampoo and conditioner really, really well so there is no residue left in your hair.
  • Question
What should I do if my hair is dry and short?

  • Question
Is using vinegar good for conditioning hair?

Vinegar (especially apple cider vinegar) is good for your hair. It balances the pH level and closes your cuticles on your hair. This makes your hair somewhat straighter, softer and shinier.
