  • Question
I want to scream like Tyler Joseph in Car Radio, but I'll be using a microphone. How do I not make everyone deaf?
    Community Answer
Try moving the mic away from your face as the loudness of your voice increases.
  • Question
My throat feels irritated like a sore throat after practice but it does not feel painful. Am I doing it wrong?
    Community Answer
If you feel any pain, stop immediately, as yes, you're doing it incorrectly. However, at first your voice won't be used to the feeling. While screaming, your throat should not hurt, but if it begins to feel a bit sore, take the night off and try again tomorrow. Your voice needs to adjust to this new action.
  • Question
Should it feel like I've been coughing after singing?

No, not at all. That is a sign you are damaging your voice.
  • Question
Is it safe to scream sing if I am sick or have a cold?
    Community Answer
No, as you can do a lot of damage to your vocal chords.
  • Question

  • Question
My friends say I'm really good, but I hate singing in front of my parents, and they are always around me. How do I practice alone?

Practice when you are in your room or home alone. If you can, you might also try going to a secluded place like the woods or the back of your school and practicing there.
  • Question

  • Question
I have to scream for a play that I am in, but I am also a singer. How do I scream without damaging my vocal chords?
    Community Answer
It's a different kind of vocalization, and you're just "hitting notes" in a succession to imitate a scream. Just keep in mind that your voice is a tool, and even if they want you to 'scream bloody murder', there is a way to do that.
  • Question
What happens if you damage your voice and can't hit normal notes as well as you used to? Is there a remedy for the damage done?
    Community Answer
No. The damage to the voice at that time is permanent.
  • Question
Will screaming alter my singing voice?
    Community Answer
If you will do it correctly it will not, but if done incorrectly it can greatly damage your singing (and speaking) voices.
  • Question
I followed the steps correctly. But after I screamed, my throat felt a little tired and weird, but there was no damage in my voice. What should I do?
    Community Answer
You should keep practicing. When you first start out, it typically feels odd. If the feeling continues or your voice/throat start to ache, you might need to stop or take longer breaks between practices.
  • Question
How do I make my voice go to the upper ranges?
    Community Answer
Practice singing your current highest notes and trying to go higher. If your voice breaks, keep practicing until the notes are more comfortable. If you can hit the notes successfully, keep practicing going up to those notes until they're easier to hit.
  • Question
My singing voice is great and I don't want to lose it. I want to scream, also. Now what should I do?
    Dakota Doty
    Community Answer
If you are going to scream, prevent yourself from eating/drinking anything smooth, spicy or thick before growling or screaming. Never force a growl/scream, as this causes throat and vocal damage.
  • Question
How do I find the confidence to scream? Every time I try when no one's home, I can't do it.
    Community Answer
You can always turn up the volume up a bit, and if you're still a bit uneasy, maybe sing along with the singer instead of picking out a backing track. This way you can still hear yourself, but less so. If you're using headphones, keeping both muff bits over your ears stops you hearing yourself so clearly (but make sure not to turn it up too loud). If your issue is neighbors hearing, try a music department (if you have access) or a quieter area such as the far end of a park.
  • Question
What do I do if I'm trying to scream but it comes out as a whisper?
    Community Answer
You've probably over-taxed your voice. Rest it for a few days, and if the situation doesn't improve, see your doctor.
  • Question
How can I scream like a professional?
    Community Answer
Practice. Learning to scream takes time, especially if you’re a beginner. The more you practice, the better you’ll become at screaming. Take breaks if your voice/throat hurts. Stay hydrated and always warm up. There are videos that show great techniques that some singers like Oli Sykes use. Just practice.
  • Question
I want to scream like Corey Taylor from Slipknot in 2001. I am a huge fan of his. What can I do to make it similar?
    Community Answer
Don't breathe in your lungs, breathe from your diaphragm. Also, listen to death metal, as Corey got most of his inspiration from death metal. It would also be helpful to read articles about him, to learn more about his technique.

    Community Answer
Pretend that you have a straw in your mouth. Place a hand on your stomach and slowly inhale through that straw. Focus on feeling the air in your stomach, while you keep your shoulders relaxed. Slowly exhale through the straw.
