  • Question
Is a 17 year old old enough to get in to an R rated movie?
    Community Answer
Yes, the MPAA guidelines state that an R rating means an unaccompanied minor must be 17 to purchase a ticket. Be sure to have ID with you, as some cinemas strictly enforce this policy.
  • Question
What do I do if I look too young to get into an R rated movie, but I'm old enough?
    Community Answer
If you have an ID, bring it with you.
  • Question
Can I watch an adult film at 17?
    Community Answer
You can watch R-rated movies at age 17; for NC-17 films, you need to be at least 18.
  • Question
What if someone in the theater reports me and I get kicked out?
    Community Answer
If you get kicked out there's not much you can do about it. Don't try sneaking back in, you could get banned temporarily or permanently. However, it's not likely you'll get spotted once you're in the theater because it's dark and theater personnel don't go around to everyone seated to check for ID.
  • Question
How do I pass as 18 as a short 15 year old?
    Community Answer
Here, confidence is the key. Do your best to look and speak older, but the way that you carry yourself will be just as important.
  • Question
    If I am a 6'2 fifteen-year-old with a deep voice, will I have a problem?
    Community Answer
Probably not, just act mature and make sure you follow the rules in this article about dressing appropriately.
  • Question
I'm 5'7 and people always think I'm 18 years old, but I'm 12. Do you think they would let me in?
    NY Blossom
    Top Answerer
They might ask for ID. You can follow these steps, but have a backup plan in case you are caught.
  • Question
Will they let me in if I'm a 12-year-old dressed as an adult?
    Community Answer
Probably not, because 12-year-olds look nothing like adults, no matter how hard they try.
  • Question
What do I do if someone catches me and I say my parent is in there and they ask me to point to them out. Then I point at someone and they go to them and ask if they are parent?
    Community Answer
They most likely wont do that (it would be disturbing them) but if they do maybe wink at them or make a gesture that they would know to go along with it. If they don't, you'll probably get kicked out. Go peacefully.
  • Question
Can I get into an R-rated movie by lying to the usher?
    Community Answer
No. They are trained to spot people lying and going to the wrong movie. A lot of times, someone from the box office will alert the usher of people that may seem suspicious.
  • Question
Can I go to an R rated movie with my parents if I'm younger than 16?
    Community Answer
There may be some exceptions, but yes, generally you can see R rated movies if you're accompanied by a parent.
  • Question
Is bribing the ticket taker a good idea?
    Community Answer
Probably not. They don't care about your wish to get in, and wouldn't want to lose their job over letting underage kids see movies.
  • Question
Is a photo ID the only acceptable form of ID?
    Community Answer
    Yes.
  • Question
Can my sister (17) buy the tickets and then give it to us, and then we just walk in but with out her coming to the movie?
    AbigailAbernathy
    Top Answerer
No. If you are caught unaccompanied in a rated R movie, you will be ejected from the film.
  • Question
Can I buy a ticket to a rated-R movie if I am underage but my parent is with me?
    Community Answer
Yes, if you are underage but want to see an R-rated movie, just have a parent/guardian or someone who is at least 17 or 18.
  • Question
What should you do if they ask for ID?
    Community Answer
You can say you forgot it, or something happened to it. Another possible excuse is it is broken and you just ordered a new one. Of course, they've heard it all before so you'll probably be sent away, as they are advised to not let people in without ID.
  • Question
I'm 17, but my brother is 16. Can I buy his ticket so both of us can watch the movie?
    NY Blossom
    Top Answerer
Some locations will only allow you to buy one ticket if you're 17, so you can try it and see if it works.
  • Question
I think these are good ideas but I don't think they will work for me, I can't even pass for 13, what are good options for me?
    Community Answer
Try to use the method where an older (sufficiently aged) sibling or friend lets you in through the exit or buys the ticket. Or, wait until the DVD is rented at home and your parents agree to you watching it. At least that way, everyone has made a decision together that the movie can be watched by you and if it traumatizes you, your parents are responsible for picking up the pieces.
  • Question
Why shouldn't I run away if they catch me sneaking in?
    Community Answer
Running away isn't a good choice, because they have cameras and facial recognition software with which they can still identify you, and possibly then ban you from the theater.
  • Question
What should I do if the movie theatre does not let an underage person even if there is a parent?
    Community Answer
It depends on the age of the underage person. if you are around 11 or younger, then they may not let you in. If you are older, they, depending on who is running it, may not mind letting you in. As long as your parent/guardian is at least 18 or so, you should get in with no problems.
  • Question
If my parents bought me a ticket online, can I just walk in?
    Community Answer
They could still stop you when checking your ticket on the way into the movie screens. But as you already have a ticket, you'll almost definitely be let in.
  • Question
Are some of these methods easier than others?
    Community Answer
The best method is to go with a group of friends who are 17 or older. When asked for your ID, say you don't have one and that you haven't started driving (for a license) yet, and your friends gave you a ride. Have them back you up to claim you are 17. But never say your age unless you are asked. It'll look like you're trying too hard to blend into that age group and you'll be suspicious. Never theater hop; if caught, you could be banned from the theater.
  • Question
Why is "Fifty Shades of Grey" rated R and has no violence?
    AbigailAbernathy
    Top Answerer
It has very explicit sex scenes, nudity, and a lot of cursing. Rated R is not only exclusive to violence.
  • Question
Can I get into a movie in the company of an 18-year-old who is not my guardian? In other words, my friend is 18, if he buys tickets for my other friend and me, does that still count?
    NY Blossom
    Top Answerer
Yes, usually you can get in as long as an adult is with you. If you needed to, you could say he was your guardian.
  • Question
The ticket taker is far away from the theater rooms. What if I buy a ticket to a G, PG or a PG-13 movie and I just act like I am going to see the right movie, then walk normally to the wrong theater?
    NY Blossom
    Top Answerer
You'll probably be fine. You can lie if caught and say you were confused. Keep in mind this is illegal and could get you banned from the theater.
  • Question
What if I'm seventeen but I'm so short that even when I have my driver's license they don't believe me?
    Community Answer
This is unlikely to happen, no matter how short you are. If you show them your driver's license, they should let you buy a ticket. If they don't, ask to speak to the manager. You're 17, and entitled to buy a ticket.
  • Question
I'm 14 years old and tall enough to pass for 15, but I'm with a friend who is 13 and short. What is the best way to get in?
    Community Answer
Have her buy a ticket to another movie, then sneak in to watch the R-Rated movie with you.
  • Question
Can an older person buy tickets for me and my friend and give them to us to use, or will the ticket taker question us about our age?
    Community Answer
This may depend on how old the two of you look and the thoroughness of the ticket taker but generally they will ask for ID.
  • Question
I'm 15 years old; will they let me see an R rated movie of any kind?
    NY Blossom
    Top Answerer
You could probably pass for 17, but if ID is required, then no. In this case, ask an adult to buy you a ticket.
  • Question
Can I take a photocopy of my permit and just change the month?
    Community Answer
Absolutely not. Theater employees are trained to spot fake IDs, don't even try it.
