    Expert Answer
You can apply a shoe stretching solution to a leather belt to soften it, but leather conditioner really works better.
  • Question
When I oil my belt, will the oil then transfer to my pants?
    Community Answer
It depends on the material of the pants. Make sure to let the oil fully soak into your belt before putting it on.
  • Question
Can I use gun cleaning oil to soften a leather belt?
    Community Answer
Gun oil is produced from mineral oil, so no, you need a natural oil as mentioned above.
  • Question
Can I use mink oil to soften a leather belt?
    Community Answer
Yes; in fact, it's preferable to a plant-based oil, and won't go rancid like the other oils mentioned. Use saddle soap to clean, if needed, before applying mink oil.
  • Question
Do I oil both sides of the leather strap?
    Community Answer
It's best that you just oil up the front side, not the suede side. If you oil that side, it can stain and transfer to your pants.
  • Question
Can I use linseed oil to soften a leather belt?
    Community Answer
Probably not. Linseed oil is a drying oil meaning that it will polymerize into a hard coating, which makes it an excellent varnish but a poor leather conditioner.
  • Question
Thank you for the article. Should I apply to both sides of the belt, or just the smoother surface?
    Equestriangoose
    Top Answerer
Just the front side. Oiling the other side will cause oil to transfer to your clothing. If the belt is extremely dry, you can apply oil to that side, but wear the belt with darker colored clothing the first couple of times you wear it.
  • Question
Can I use alcohol and Vaseline to soften a leather belt that's stiff and thick?
    Equestriangoose
    Top Answerer
Alcohol is very drying, so no, don't use it. Vaseline tends to sit on the surface of leather, so it won't do much good. It would be better to use a dishwashing soap or non-scented hand soap and olive or vegetable oil.
