    Expert Answer
When a horse rears, lean forward and do not scream or yell. Be prepared for the horse to possibly buck after it rears, as well. Depending upon the build of the horse, the horse's neck may provide stability—but do not rely on it. Keep your heels down, your torso long, and breathe.

  • Question
What is wrong if my horse, who has always been obedient, suddenly starts bucking when I ask him to move?
    Community Answer
He could be bucking because it gives him a short rest as a reward. Try being firm with him and tell him to keep trotting. If he trots without bucking, reward him by patting him. Give your horse a short break to keep him from getting tired and bucking to get a rest.
  • Question
How do I tell a horse that I'm in charge?
    Community Answer
When a horse tests you, always stay on and work the horse. If the horse ignores you, turn the head away from where it's going. This causes the horse to lose balance and have no choice but to go that direction. On the ground, you need to round pin/lunge the horse so it knows you're the boss.

If you are confident that you know what you're doing, and if you have the resources and are up for the challenge, go ahead.
  • Question
How do I stop bucking in canter?

Keep their head up! They will try and lower their head to get their back legs up to buck, so lift your hands to keep them up.
  • Question
My young mare used to be good for her age. Then after someone rode her, she started bucking. She does it really badly now. What should I do?
    Community Answer
If a calm horse starts bucking out of nowhere and it gets worse over time, that is probably because she's in pain. Stop riding your horse and consult your vet as soon as possible. If the vet says she's not injured, consult a professional horse trainer for your and your horse's safety.
  • Question
My horse is a barrel horse and when I try to get her to walk, she won't, especially after the pattern. If we try to walk, she will for a little bit but she will buck straight up. She will not walk at all. What should I do?

Try to tire out your horse a little and walk her around on a tight rein so she cannot trot or buck.
  • Question
My horse bucks after a jump and while she's cantering. What should I do?

  • Question
My horse has bucked me off a few times before and I stayed seated, but this evening my horse tried really hard to buck me off and I even hit my chin on her head! What should I do?
    Community Answer
Try using ground work and lunging to establish that you are safe and that she should follow you and trust in you. Then keep her head pinned to one side so that she can't buck when she usually does. Release her head, then be prepared to use all your arm muscles to restrain her if she acts up again. Horses are very tough and sometimes will put up a fight. If your horse is bucking she is very athletic and that is a great trait.
  • Question
My horse is bucking and rearing because she doesn't want to leave a friend. She will not even walk forward. What can I do?
    Community Answer
The answer to this problem is pretty simple. All you have to do is take the other horse away. One day, just put your horse into a separate but adjoining pasture. After a few days, remove the other horse to the stables or to a pasture out of your horse's line of vision. Your horse will get used to not having the other horse around. She should not care anymore when she sees the other horse, and eventually she will not even notice the other horse is around when you are riding. Also, practice riding with the other horse some distance away.
  • Question
Whenever I tell my horse to gallop, she starts bucking. What do I do to keep her from doing this?
    Community Answer
Yank back on the reins. It stops the horse and gets their attention. It doesn't hurt the horse. After you do that, pet the horse and talk to the horse and let it know it's ok. Feed it a treat after riding. And instead of telling the horse to gallop, kick the horse in the side one time and the horse will speed up.
  • Question
Is it a good idea to buy a pony that is known to buck when exited?
    Community Answer
It depends on your riding level. If you are confident that you can teach the horse properly, then go for it. Otherwise, I wouldn't recommend it.
  • Question
I have a horse that bucks when I take her into a trot and won't stop, but continues fighting even to the point of rolling over on top of me. What do you think I should do?
    Community Answer
First, get a vet to check her to rule out any back problems, or pain, also saddle fit. If all is OK, then get a professional trainer to work with her. With the horse bucking and rolling over on you, it is just too dangerous for a layperson. You need a professional, really.
  • Question
If I whip my horse while cantering, he bucks. What can I do?
    Community Answer
Avoid whipping as a punishment. It can make the horse resent you and think that every time you get on, you will whip him.
  • Question
My horse likes me, but whenever I try to get him into a trot he starts to buck. I then stop and roundpen him, and after that he doesn't try again. I don't want to have to keep doing this, what can I do?
    Madeline Cox
    Community Answer
Don't stop and roundpen him, just keep giving him the signal to trot until he stops bucking and starts trotting. Eventually he'll learn that you're not joking around. Some aids, like spurs or a crop, would be helpful.
