Calmly remind the child that you know their family's rules. Let them know that you didn't make the rules, but they still have to be on their best behavior when their parents/guardians are gone.

No, it isn't. You're the proxy for the children's parents, so it's your job to uphold their rules and boundaries.
  • Question
How do I take care of my little brother?
    Community Answer
Taking care of your siblings is a great thing to do to give your parents a break. You could take a walk with them (with your parents permission), or play a board game. If they're younger, try doing a puzzle, or playing with their favorite toys. If they become difficult or disobedient, talk to your parents about what punishments you can use to control their behavior.
  • Question
I want to tactfully let my parents know they not treating my 6-year-old brother right. They use threats and yelling and punishments that are quite harsh and brutal. However, I am only a 13-year-old girl. Any tips?
    Community Answer
Try talking to them sometime when they are calm. Tell them how it makes you feel when they are so harsh to your brother and that you wish they could be more understanding toward your brother and discipline more calmly. Maybe ask them to take a look at this article or How to Discipline a Child . If nothing changes, consider talking to a school counselor or another trusted adult about the situation.
  • Question
How do I handle my baby that cries too much?
    Community Answer
If your baby cries too much, distract it with something it likes, such as a pacifier. But Babies do cry for a reason. It might be hungry, wet, sleepy, etc. Sometimes you just have to let the baby cry it out. If you're worried, consult your pediatrician to rule out colic or any other possible condition.
  • Question
How do I make my brother stop being annoying?
    Community Answer
Little brothers are annoying; it's a fact. They act annoying because they want attention, so the best thing you can do is find an activity or two that you both enjoy, and spend some time with him. The more bonding you do, the less annoying he'll be.
  • Question
What do I do if my kids are upset with me all the time?
    Community Answer
Do a special craft or go somewhere nice with them; they might think you do not care about them, so having a "fun day" would help.
  • Question
How do I get my mom to stop spanking me?
    Community Answer
Let her know, respectfully, that spanking you isn't an effective means of punishment. Suggest some things you would rather her do than spank you -- take away toys/electronics, ground you, etc. However, be sure to explain to your mom that you're not trying to avoid punishment. You just don't want her to resort to spanking.
  • Question
My sisters trouble me and are really angry with me. What should I do?
    Community Answer
First of all apologize for what you did, then explain to them what you are going through and what they are making you go through.
  • Question
I am fed up with my younger sisters. They insult me in public. How do I cool down and deal with them?
    Community Answer
Talk to them. Take a few slow, deep breaths and calmly tell them how you feel. If that doesn't help, talk to your parents.
  • Question
When we are handling others' kids and they do not persistently listen, even after discussing rules, what can be done?
    Beau Gavigan
    Community Answer
Put them in time out. They need to understand that all the "fun stuff" is a privilege, not a right. No TV, video games, no cookies (or whatever snack), etc. Stand firm, do not argue or compromise with them, and do not explain yourself. If they ask "why?" they are questioning your authority. Assert your dominance, show them that there are consequences (time out, etc.), and they will mellow out. If not, refuse to watch them any more because the parents are to blame for the bad kids in the first place.
  • Question
When I accidentally make my brother mad, what should I do?
    Community Answer
You should explain to him that it was an accident and apologize.
  • Question
How can I get my younger brother to stop throwing things at me?
    Community Answer
Tell a parent, or tell him to stop.
  • Question
How can I handle my naughty stubborn and angry younger sisters?
    Community Answer
I know how you feel. I have siblings too but that's just life! Try to be nice to them and ask them why they're being mean. If they say they're not, give them "The Look," like "really!?" look. Try to ignore them sometimes. Make them meals, help them with chores, read them a story at night and tuck them in. Just be nice to them and give them the right affection, and lots of discipline.
  • Question
My 3 year old child doesn't respect other people without his family, especially home helpers. He demands loudly what he wants, without respect. I try to warn him not to do such things but he doesn't listen.
    Staydan
    Community Answer
This is just normal 3 year old behavior. They realize they don't have to listen, so they use the opportunity of freedom and choice. Try rewarding him when he does things correctly rather than only punishing him when he does things incorrectly.
  • Question
My niece and nephew don't really like study. They enjoy playing rather that opening their book and studying. How can I handle this matter?
    Community Answer
Tell them they can play after study. During the study session, give them a break to play once a while. Let them know that they will not be allowed to play if they get bad grades.
  • Question
My siblings get me into trouble and I get the blame because I am the oldest, what should I do
    Laila Clayton
    Community Answer
Find evidence it was not you, or calmly tell your parents it wasn't you. If you moan and go on about it, they will probably just think you are lying, but if you act maturely, state the facts assertively and leave it at that, they will trust you.
  • Question
How do I get my children sit down and learn and understand what I teach them about living? They are aged 10 (boy) and 7 (girl). I want them to lead a good moral life.
    Laila Clayton
    Community Answer
First of all, don't force them this will just make them angry and refuse to do it. Tell them calmly and navigate them towards the seat. If there is something stopping them (such as their phone or a game), tell them they can take it with them and get rid of those objects later. Make it something they want to do, not have to by making it a conversation with mom, a two-sided discussion and not a lecture or bossing of them. Once you have gotten rid of all distractions, make sure all eyes are on you, then start by asking them questions that help them to think about what you want them to understand.
  • Question
What do I do when my sister is throwing a tantrum and there is no parent near?
    Laila Clayton
    Community Answer
Use soft voice and calm tell her to sit down. If you use a loud voice and shout, then this will just make her angrier. If that doesn't work, then firmly place your hand on her shoulders so she cannot move, look into her eyes and tell her to take deep breaths. This will help her to calm down sufficiently to start thinking and stop reacting.
  • Question
What should I do if my sibling does not respect my privacy and keeps changing right in front of me?
    Laila Clayton
    Community Answer
Teach them a lesson, take their clothes away when they are changing and only give them back if they agree not to change in front of you ever again.
  • Question
How to control my little brother from watching phone and television?
    Community Answer
If you are his babysitter, try putting a firewall on the WiFi so he can't watch videos. If this is not possible, unplugging or removing the device is the best course of action. If you are not his babysitter, I recommend you talk to your parents about how he is using devices too much.
