If I am watching a movie made in 1935 on an HD TV, will the movie show in HD?

It depends. If the movie in question was filmed using film, the resolution can be extremely good. It also depends on the medium: is it Netflix? Is it Blu-Ray? Is it a DVD?

Look for descriptions that include the following: HD Ready, 720P (progressive scan) and 1280 x 720. For the higher resolution HD, look for Full HD, FHD, 1080i (interlaced scan), 1080P (progressive scan) and 1920 x 1080. The newer, 4K displays have 4 times the picture resolution of the FHD types and are often listed as UHD (Ultra HD), 4K, 2160P and 3840 x 2160. The very newest, most expensive displays are 8K and have 16 times the picture resolution of the FHD types; they are designated as 8K, 4320P (progressive scan) and 7680 x 4320.
