    Expert Answer
When traveling with guns, the usual process involves checking in with your airline at the front counter and declaring your firearm. TSA will guide you to a specialized room where they will verify if your firearm is not loaded and may undertake additional checks. The firearm is then securely placed inside your luggage, typically in a special gun case with at least two locking mechanisms, often padlocks. For larger rifles, a specific case designed for air travel may be necessary, ensuring the firearm is locked in three different spots. Upon arrival at your destination, there will be a designated area for retrieving your firearm. It's crucial to be aware of and comply with the gun laws of each state or country you are traveling from and to.

  • Question
What process do I need to follow as a retired state trooper when I want to bring a handgun on a plane?
    Community Answer
While the Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act of 2004 enabled current and former law enforcement officers in good standing to carry concealed weapons in all 50 states, it does not enable you to board a commercial aircraft with a weapon. Only official travel (on duty) authorizes current law enforcement officers, who have necessary documentation, to board an aircraft with a weapon.

  • Question
I am traveling from Atlanta to Chicago to drive back to Atlanta with an ill relative. How should I carry my hand gun?
    Community Answer
I wouldn't. You are okay leaving Atlanta if you pack it unloaded in checked baggage and declare it. When you land in Chicago you are immediately in violation of the law. Illinois does not recognize ANY other state's CCW permit, so if you are caught with it in IL you go to jail. Driving back, if you have a GA CCW permit, each state along the way will have different laws. You're likely okay once you get into Indiana, as it seems all the other states on the way to GA will recognize your GA CCW.

  • Question
I want to give my son my rifle. How can I send it to him from Hawaii to North Carolina?
    Community Answer
The simplest solution is to locate a Federal Firearms Licensee (FFL) in North Carolina near your son. Visit atf.gov/firearms/listing-federal-firearms-licensees and download a list of dealers for North Carolina. Contact them and ask them to facilitate the transfer of your firearm to your son. They will give you instructions on where to ship it, but you should ask to see a "file copy" of their FFL to verify that they are currently licensed. To do this input the FFL number into fflezcheck.atf.gov/fflezcheck/. Verify that the expiration date has not passed and only ship the firearm to the address listed as the "premise address".
