    Expert Answer
In the United States, the proper way is to pick up your fork in your left hand and your knife in your right hand. Cut 4-5 small bites—do not cut the whole thing at one time. Put the knife on the edge of your plate, then switch your fork to your right hand, and eat each small piece one at a time.
  • Question
Which cutlery is placed on the far right, the spoon or the knife?
    Community Answer
The knife is placed directly to the right of the plate with the cutting edge facing the plate. The spoon is then placed to the right of the knife.
  • Question
Can I put my food in my mouth with the knife while eating with the fork and the knife?
    Community Answer
Not a great idea. It is surprisingly easy to cut yourself if you do that, depending on how sharp the knife is.
  • Question
How do I place my cutlery after eating?
    Community Answer
Place your cutlery on the plate with the fork on the left and the knife on the right side, and the knife's blade facing inwards.
  • Question
Should a left-handed person hold a fork in his left hand and a knife in his right hand?
    Community Answer
Yes, that is typically how it is done.
  • Question
What type of spoon is placed before the knife?
    Gavin Donnelly
    Community Answer
It would depend on the courses that you are eating, for example if soup will be served then you would use a larger soup spoon, if it is for dessert then a smaller spoon would be more useful.
  • Question
So if the chicken has bones in it, how do I cut it with the knife?
    Community Answer
You can put the fork right next to the bone, and then use a knife to pull it off the bone.
  • Question
How should I cut harder food items with the table knife if they blunt?
    Gavin Donnelly
    Community Answer
You should ask for a sharper knife so that you avoid any potential slips and maybe even cutting yourself.
  • Question
If you are left handed how do you handle the cutlery?
    Gavin Donnelly
    Community Answer
You should always use your dominant hand for the knife while cutting and your non-dominant hand for the fork.
  • Question
How do I use a fork and spoon?
    Gavin Donnelly
    Community Answer
In most cases, you would use a spoon on its own for soups or other liquid dishes, however, it is acceptable to use the spoon with your non-dominant hand to push food onto your fork instead of using a knife for this.

In the UK, put knife and fork together with the fork on the left and the knife on the right, with the knife blade facing towards left at the 6 o'clock position (handles towards you). In Europe/Americas, put them together at 4-5 o'clock position. In the subcontinent, multiple dishes are eaten together by mixing them with each other. For example, mixing rice with gravy or yogurt and eating pieces of meat and chicken at the same time, hence you may be using knife, spoon and fork at the same time. You are holding two of them in your hands and the third one will be placed on the side of the plate on the top right. When you have finished, place all of them at the 6 o'clock position in the following order: knife, spoon and fork.
