This depends on your particular iron, but 10-20 seconds is usually about right. If you can't achieve a crimp in that time, your iron may not be hot enough. If that's too long it's probably too hot for your hair.

You can create crimps with braiding. Make small braids all over and press them with a flat iron.

You can crimp unwashed hair, but you shouldn't crimp dirty hair that's oily and has a lot of product on it. If you've washed your hair maybe a day or two ago and have little to none product build up, you can crimp your hair.

How long do I keep the crimper in my hair?

    Community Answer
It depends on how hot your crimper is and your hair texture. More than one second and less than thirty seconds. I would say 2-10 seconds if you are doing a hot-to-regular temperature for your hair. If it takes more that 30 seconds to crimp your hair then I would go up a setting.
  • Question
Do I have to condition my hair, or just leave it like it is?
    Amy Harrison

Conditioner is best used when you wash your hair to give your hair moisture, shine and nutrients it requires, especially when you're using thermal heat.
  • Question
What hairstyle can I do the day after I crimp it?

If you are still trying to show off the crimps, try a half updo. If you want to hide the crimps, try a French braid.
