    Expert Answer
One rule of thumb you can follow is that your wedding gift should be equal to the amount that the couple spent for you to be a guest at their wedding. For example, if the bride and groom spent $150 per person for food and beverage, you would give cash or a gift that is equal to that amount.
  • Question
How should the gift envelope be addressed?
    Community Answer
You can address the gift envelope however you please. You can use both first names if you're close friends; the only thing to avoid is "Mr. and Mrs. [his first name] Last Name."
  • Question
What should I write on the card?
    Community Answer
It would be appropriate to write a short, personal note. Congratulate both parties on their marriage, and wish them many happy years together. If you're a close friend or family member, Write a short personal statement, which could be in reference to a shared anecdote or personal memory.
  • Question
Can I use my company check?
    Community Answer
Avoid using a company check. It will be a more personal gift, and probably more meaningful to the married couple, if you write a personal check.
  • Question
The couple is not yet married. Do I send a check payable to one or the other in maiden or married name?
    Community Answer
Send it to the man so you can be sure the last name won't change.
  • Question
Would it be better to give cash or a check?
    Community Answer
It's entirely up to you. Either gift would be appreciated!

  • Question
I addressed the envelope Mr and Mrs with his first and last name - will this be OK?

This is indeed the customary way to do this. Sure, with emancipation and equal rights finally finding a broad acceptance in our world, this can be a question. But it's only a very small aspect of the wedding day, and it can be cumbersome indeed to do it the PC way: "To Mr. [his first name] [his last name]-[her last name] and Mrs. [her first name] [his last name]-[her last name]", or do you put her last name before his? I wouldn't worry too much.
  • Question
How do I write a check to two men who are getting married?
    Community Answer
Do it in the same way. You can write to one i.e. Sam Smith or to both i.e. Sam Smith or Walter Jones. Make sure it says "or" and not "and", as they would need a joint account if you write "and."
  • Question
I am writing a check to a couple on their wedding day. Does the bride automatically have her married last name that day?
    Community Answer
No, usually you would still write her maiden name on the wedding gifts. If you know them as close friends and feel comfortable taking a step ahead, you may write the groom's last name with the bride's on wedding envelopes. Or, avoid using last names altogether and just go with first names.
  • Question
When to send cheque when the visual wedding is Aug./20 and the reception July/21? (Covid-19 delayed.)
    Community Answer
At receptions, guests usually offer the gifts. The wedding invitation will mention the details. If not, you could send the gift or just email saying the gift will be given at the 2021 reception.
