Kinds of Attraction

Who doesn’t love love? Every day, people all over the world are flirting, courting, and generally romancing. But… what exactly is love? What’s going on in our bodies and minds that turns us on, gets us going, and makes us want to be swept right off our feet? Well, we may never totally understand something as mysterious as romance, but science can lend a hand and show us where to start.

Some experts believe that “love” can be broken down, or at least categorized, into 3 different parts:

Lust
Lust is mostly a bodily sensation, and is the force that drives your turn-ons. In other words, it’s the sex drive! This is what makes us want to reproduce and make more little humans. It’s driven by the hormones testosterone and estrogen, which are produced in the sex organs—makes sense! Think of lust as the surface-level form of love. It’s physical, instinctual, and almost impulsive.

Attraction
This is the layer of love that sits just under lust. There’s a physical aspect to it—you probably have a certain “type” of person you’re attracted to—but there’s also a mental and intellectual element. After all, attraction is driven by dopamine, which rewards our brains when we form meaningful connections and interactions. When we have those positive interactions, we get that hit of dopamine and start craving more. And the more time we spend with someone, the more we start to form…

Attachment This is maybe the deepest form of love. It comes after lust and attraction, when we really get to know someone. Not only do we know them, though; we start to rely and depend on them. We get to a point where our very lives just wouldn’t be the same without them! Attachment is fueled by oxytocin, which is often released during physical intimacy. Not just any intimacy, though! It usually comes with those kinds of activities that are common when building lasting and meaningful relationships—sex, childbirth, and breastfeeding. In other words, oxytocin is the bonding hormone, and helps us attach ourselves to one another.
