Understanding Bisexuality vs. Pansexuality
What is bisexuality?
Bisexuality means being attracted to more than one gender. Unlike gay or straight people, who only experience attraction to one other gender identity, bisexual people experience sexual attraction to multiple gender identities.
But doesn’t “bi” just mean 2?
Yes, the prefix means 2, but the orientation means 2+. When the word was coined, all the way back in 1859, scientists used “bisexual” to talk about male and female sex characteristics, not gender or sexual attraction. Much later, in 1970, the word was adopted into the LGBTQ+ community. While some people thought of it as attraction to just 2 genders, there have always been people who embraced it as the attraction to more than one
gender.
What is pansexuality?
Pansexuality means being attracted to someone regardless of gender, or being attracted to any
gender, not just one or even just a couple.
What’s the difference between bisexuality and pansexuality?
Recently, many say the difference is that while bisexual people are attracted to multiple genders, they’re not necessarily attracted to any
or all
genders, like a pansexual person is.
But I thought they were the same thing?
Honestly, it depends on who you ask! Many bisexual people will tell you that they’re attracted to any gender, and that the bisexual label has always included people who are attracted to any gender. “Pansexual” is a more recent term that’s just a little more specific. Feel free to use whatever term feels most comfortable, but remember not to erase LGBTQ+ history or talk down to fellow members of the LGBTQ+ community.
Is pansexual under the bisexual umbrella?
Many would say yes! Often, “pansexual” is a more specific way to say that you’re attracted to any gender, even if many bisexual people are also attracted to any gender. It’s all about how much detail you want.
Is it wrong to use one over the other?
Not at all! Use whichever label feels accurate and comfortable to you, and respect which labels other people use, as well. And don’t erase someone else’s label by claiming that one is more necessary or accurate than the other.
Omnisexual vs. Pansexual
Omnisexual is a newer term that describes someone who’s attracted to all genders, but who might have preferences about which genders they prefer. On the other hand, someone who’s pansexual might not have those sorts of preferences.
Pansexual vs. Demisexual
Someone who’s demisexual is only attracted to someone after they’ve formed some sort of emotional or intellectual bond with them, and it usually comes with other labels like gay, straight, bisexual, or pansexual.
What is multisexual?
Multisexual or polysexual means being attracted to 3 or more identities. It’s a newer label that’s a response to the idea that “bisexual” means 2 identities, even if this isn’t necessarily accurate.
What is monosexual? Monosexual is a label that describes people who are only attracted to a single gender, like people who are strictly gay or straight.
