Wipe your computer clean and start fresh on Windows 10, 11, and macOS
Are you troubleshooting, giving your computer away, or selling it? In that case, you will want to revert it to factory settings. Computer & Tech Specialist Luigi Oppido says that it's the most common thing to do if you're getting rid of a computer and you don't want your personal information on it. Read on to learn more.
Resetting Your PC to Factory Settings
If you opt to reset your PC from Settings or WinRE, your computer will be completely wiped of your information and act like new. Back up any data you want to keep. On Windows, go to Settings > System > Recovery and choose the reset option or launch WinRE and reset in Troubleshoot > Reset this PC.
Steps
-
Open Settings on your computer. This is only useful if you know the password and are able to log in. If you can't log in, reset the PC from WinRE .
- Press Win + I to quickly open Settings.
-
2Navigate to Recovery. It's in two locations, depending on your version of Windows:
- Windows 11: Go to System > Recovery.
- Windows 10: Go to Update & Security > Recovery.

3Click Reset PC and choose to "Remove everything". This ensures that everything on your computer is deleted, so it is a blank slate again.
- If you are just troubleshooting and don't plan on getting rid of the computer, you'll want to make sure all your important data (like docs or PDFs) is saved on another drive as a backup . This is also a good idea if you want to transfer your data to a new computer.
- According to Oppido, your computer will act like it did when you first took it out of the box, including prompting you for a username and Wi-Fi.
