2Think of what those traits or stories say about them. A good roast doesn’t just point out flaws or quirks. Instead, it uses those things to appreciate the person behind them. Think about how your list of fun traits or stories speaks to the person you’re roasting, whether it’s yourself or another person. Try to put a positive, admirable spin on it to avoid speaking too negatively. Garavito says it’s a push-pull of compliments and jabs.
- For example, if they always put their shoes on wrong or get lost, they’re probably someone who’s a little spacey or absentminded, which can be a fun and not-too-sensitive quality to poke fun at.
- Avoid traits and qualities they might be sensitive of. For example, they probably won’t appreciate you poking fun at their illnesses or physical traits they can’t change.

3Combine the details with the bigger picture to make your roast. Now that you have a list of traits, as well as the quality they speak to, it’s time to devise some funny zingers. Take a look at iconic roasts to get some ideas, but the key is to slightly embarrass the person while also appreciating them. For best results, focus on a lot of tight, snappy jokes with a quick setup and punchline that get straight to the point, rather than long, drawn-out stories. Payne says to take a simple idea and exaggerate or heighten it. For example:
