Anyone with a Reddit account can send private messages (PMs, or sometimes DMs) to another user, although these are limited to text only. You can also send chats, which are faster and a little more casual. We’ll show you how to send messages and chats on both the desktop and mobile websites, as well as the Reddit app.

Sending Private Messages on Reddit

  • Send a private message on the Reddit website by selecting the notification bell > “Messages” > “Send a Private Message.”
  • Send a private message on the Reddit app by tapping the notification bell > > “New Message.”
  • Send a chat by selecting the chat bubble > “+” then type in the username of the user you want to chat with.

  1. Navigate to Reddit.com . At the top navigation bar, you’ll find a chat bubble icon with 3 horizontal dots ( ••• ). Select this to open the chat menu.
    • Chats are faster and more direct than messages. Think of chats like texting on a phone, and messages like sending an email.
    • On the mobile app, the chat icon is at the bottom of the screen.
  2. In the chat menu that pops up, you’ll see another chat bubble, this time with a “+” sign inside. Select this to start a new chat.
  3. In the text field that pops up, type the username of the person with whom you wish to chat. The field below will autofill with probable username matches. Select the correct username of the user from this field.
    • Or, click the username of the user you’d like to chat with while browsing Reddit, then select the chat bubble icon from their profile page. This is currently the only way to chat on the Reddit mobile website.
  4. Find this button near the bottom of the chat window.
  5. Type your message in the text field, then click the arrow icon to the right of the field. This will send your message to the user, but note that the user may accept or decline your message.
    • You may also attach a photo with the camera icon, attach a gif with the “GIF” icon, or an emoji with the smiley face icon.
