A handy guide to staying in touch via iMessage with family living in Japan
To send an iMessage to someone in Japan, the process is rather simple. You must have the Japanese phone number of your contact, which will start with the country code +81 . The recipient must also have an iPhone with iMessage turned on to send the message as an iMessage, instead of a regular SMS message. As long as you and the recipient are sending iMessages (not SMS messages), sending and receiving messages is completely free.
