… Shrek was based on a book?
That’s right—before Shrek was your favorite Mike Myers movie, it was a literary masterpiece by children’s author and illustrator William Steig. Steig’s book came out in 1990 and centers on an ogre who leaves home to seek his fortune. (Bonus fun fact: book Shrek can also breathe fire!)

… Shrek saved DreamWorks?
Shrek ’s production company, DreamWorks, was floundering financially until the first movie in the franchise came out. The film was such a hit, it completely saved the company.

… SNL ’s Chris Farley was originally cast to voice Shrek?
Before his sudden death in 1997, Saturday Night Live! star Christ Farley was chosen to provide the voice of Shrek. We love Myers’ portrayal, but what an amazing Shrek Farley would have made!

…Shrek was originally going to be Canadian?
Because Shrek’s voice actor Mike Myers is Canadian, Shrek was going to have a Canadian accent, too, but Myers ultimately decided the accent needed to be a little gruffer and ogrish, and abandoned his own accent for a Scottish one. We agree with Myers: we’re not saying Scots aren’t sweet and kind, but a Canadian Shrek would have just been too polite and, frankly, un-Shreky.

… Shrek was the first Best Animated Feature Oscar winner?
Believe it or not, the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature didn’t exist until 2002! Shrek was the first film to win the award, beating out Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius and Monsters, Inc.

…the name “Shrek” stems from the Yiddish word for “terrible”? William Steig didn’t just come up with the name Shrek; it has its roots in the Yiddish word “shreklekh,” which means “awful” in English. The word “schrecklich” is also German for “dreadful.”

… Shrek is part of the Library of Congress’ National Film Registry? This is a huge honor, especially since only 25 movies were added to the Registry! The 2020 Registry pays tribute to the most influential US movies.

Back in 1991, Steven Spielberg had plans to produce an adaptation of Shrek , and he envisioned the incomparable Bill Murray as the title ogre and Steve Martin as his burro buddy. This didn’t pan out, of course, and it’s hard to imagine anyone else in these roles besides Mike Myers and Eddie Murphy—but we’re certain Bill and Steve would have done an iconic job!
