If you don't live with your grandparents, spending time with them may be difficult. You may only get to see them once or a few times every year when you get off of school, especially if they live far away. Spending time with your grandparents is one way to get close to them and to understand what they did when they were young. You can learn a lot about your grandparents if you talk to them and do relaxing activities together. Plus, it can remove the age knowledge gap you and an older generation have, which reduces prejudice and ageism. [1] If you love your grandparents and want to spend time on them, here are some ways to have fun with them while on vacation.

Method 1
Method 1 of 2:

Taking Care of Them

  1. Many grandparents who live alone have to do their chores themselves, which gets tiring for their aging bodies. They may have mobility issues, making it hard for them to walk and bend down. Grandparents who live with their children and other relatives may find it a bit easier, but you should still help them. Even if your grandparent wants to be independent and do all of their work themselves, still help them with difficult tasks.
    • Your grandparent may insist that they do their own work, but remind them that they may have difficulties in doing each task. Plus, elderly people should lessen strenuous activities.
    • Help broom and mop the floor if they need to. Help cook a few meals if your grandparent needs to cook for multiple people.
  2. If you can, try helping them walk around and exercise. If your grandparent is fully capable of walking, teach them some safe exercises to do, and go on a walk with them. If your grandparent can walk slowly, assist them in their steps. If your grandparent has mobility issues, help them take a few steps or push their wheelchair.

  3. To illustrate, a grandparent with diabetes may need to take medication. A grandparent with high cholesterol may also need to take medicine. [2] These conditions are often long-lasting, so your grandparents won't be healed and healthy after a few days of taking them.
    • It's best for an adult, such as one of your parents to remind your grandparent to take medication.

Spending Time with Your Grandparents

  1. Don't just go to your room if you temporarily live in your grandparent's house. Or, don't ignore your grandparents when they want to talk to you. Respect your grandparents; they have many decades of life experience, and they deserve to be treated well too. Don't disrespect your grandparents because they are older than you. Talk with your grandparents about the news, school, or about your grandparents' lives. Maybe they have an interesting story from when they were young.
    • Your grandparents may get nostalgic from things decades prior. Offer to look through old photo albums with them.
  2. Your grandparents may want to do something relaxing because of their age. So, pamper up at home or go to a salon to get their hair, nails, and skin done. Suggest your grandparents try out a new hairstyle or try out some new clothes too for something new.
    • Ask your parents if there are any nearby salons or clothing stores to go to with your grandparents. If there aren't, you may need adults to help take you there. If that's not possible, take care at home.
  3. If your grandparents cook, they may be the ones to go grocery shopping too. Your grandparents may be happy to take you grocery shopping. Pick out some healthy food (vegetables and fruits) for dinner later, and add some snacks into the basket. If you can, find a farmer's market for a more traditional experience.
  4. If your grandparents enjoyed singing karaoke after work or partied with their friends, you may invoke some of their nostalgia. They may have also heard songs on the radio. Try learning some old songs (e.g. 1950s, 1960s, or 1970s hits) and other songs they may have learned from their own parents.
    • Do this with permission first from other relatives who may live with your grandparents. They may find it a nuisance if you and your grandma belt out "Dancing Queen" by ABBA in the living room. You may have to move this into another room.
  5. If you know how to cook some things, try cooking for them. For example, prepare a simple grilled cheese sandwich. If they have a special diet because of their allergies/digestive difficulties, ask them what they usually eat. If you aren't sure what to cook, make an easy snack for your grandparents or let your parents prepare something.
  6. If they love you, you should definitely love them back. Reciprocate some actions that they do to help you. For example, if they made something for your birthday, try doing something for their birthday. If they help you with a problem, offer some suggestions if they need help too. Most people have caring, nurturing grandparents who help your parents and you for their whole lives. Display affection for your grandparents. Hug them and say "I love you" when you can.
