If you've ever traveled the highways in Albany, NY, you'll probably have come across the 9.55 miles (15.37 km) Interstate 787 [1] . Although it traverses Albany from Interstate 87 to a place where there's unclear data just where its northern terminus is, it runs a route that some people may want to take. If you haven't taken it yet, it's very doable if you need to travel it.

Travel in Albany.

  1. In Albany, the highway begins at a very confusing intersection with US-9W, where signage from I-87 tells you it has access to 9W through a set of roundabouts and a short offramp route to the sub-interstate. However, once you have taken that route east to get to the highway, the route runs along the Hudson River until it comes up to the Riverfront Preserve and the exit for I-90 W/E just short of the Patroon Island Bridge in the Lower Patroon Island section of the city of Albany.
    • The City of Albany is where most of your exits happen. Exit 1 contains two portions. I-87 is the main access, but US-9W can also be accessed. (Signage on the unsigned state reference route NY-912S leads from I-87 to US-9W.) However, after that, you'll run into NY-32 and the Port of Albany in exit 2, following by two exits containing US-9&20 (East, then West) in exits 3 and 4. Access to exit 4A is for southbounders only and it is for Colonie and Columbia Sts. Exit 5 is for I-90, but there is a split at the offramp if heading towards I-90!
      • At exits 3 and 4, exit three is signed differently southbound (it is exit 3A), while exit 4 is signed as 3B. Exit 3 serves the Albany-Rensselaer (Amtrak) station, while exit 4 (towards Downtown Albany) has access to NY-5 and the MVP Arena.
      • The pair of exits for US-9 and 20 have a very large interchange just southeast of the Empire State Plaza.

Travel in Menands.

  1. In Menands, the route continues to follow the Hudson River going into only two exits.
    • Menands has exits for NY-32 (exit 6) and NY-378 towards Watervliet, Loudonville, Menands, and Troy. However, access is permitted for servicing Hudson Valley Community College and Joseph L. Bruno Stadium.
      • If you missed exit 2 inside Albany and don't mind backtracking (if you are indeed heading north) or traffic lights, exit 6 is a godsend all in itself. Its route from the trumpet interchange here to the signed route is the unsigned reference route NY-913T.

Travel in Watervliet.

  1. In Watervliet, the route continues to run along the Hudson River. However, just after the only exit (at 23rd St towards Watervliet and Green Island), it pulls itself northwest and exits the city of Watervliet.

Travel in Colonie.

  1. In Colonie, the highway finishes. It intercepts an exit for NY-7 towards Schenectady-Saratoga Springs-Troy (NY) and Bennington (VT), but continues as the state route traffic signaled NY-787 continues north.
    • Some of the documentation you can read on Wikipedia says that there's unsigned data that the route heads east on NY-7 over the Collar City Bridge instead. However, most people see this route as naturally terminating at NY-787. However, doing so would change the mileage to a total of 10.16 miles (16.35 km). [2]

      • Although the future of this highway looks grim (following a 2016 study), this was found in March 2018 to not be the case. It does need various issues fixed, by reconfiguring some interchanges and making waterfronts easier for bicyclists and pedestrians, but converting to a more traditional roadway all to reduce traffic needs. However, what makes this tough is that I-787 is in a major floodplain. [3]
