How to Use Quora to Ask and Answer Questions

Quora is an online questions-and-answers website with very diverse content and a diverse user base. It is an extremely useful platform for getting answers to your questions as well as brushing up your writing skills and sharing your knowledge. This wikiHow article teaches you how to get started using Quora.

Getting Started with Quora

Go to Quora’s webpage and sign up or sign in.
Click the pen and paper icon to view questions.
Click the pencil icon to the left to add topics you know about.
Click Answer below a question to answer it.
Click Add question at the top to ask a question.

Signing Up

Open the Quora website or download the mobile app. To visit the Quora website, go to Quora.com in a web browser on your computer or mobile device. You can also use the Quora mobile app, which is free to download from the App Store on iPhone and iPad or the Google Play Store on Android.

Sign up for Quora. To do so, click Continue with Google or Continue with Facebook to sign up with your Google or Facebook accounts. Alternatively, click Sign up with email and fill out the form to create an account with your email address.
- If you already have an account, enter your email address and password in the fields on the right side and click Login .

Adding Topics You Know About

Click the “Answer” icon. It’s the icon that resembles a pen and paper at the top of the page in a web browser or at the bottom in the mobile app.

Open the “Add Topics” window. To do so on a web browser, click the pencil icon next to “Topics you know about.” It’s above your list of topics at the top of the page on the right side. This allows you to edit your topics that you know about. If you are using the mobile app, click Add topics below the first set of questions.
- If you sign up with your Facebook or Google account, this field will be automatically populated with topics from your Google or Facebook profile.

Enter a topic. Enter a topic you know about in the line that says “Add Topic” and press Enter. You can add as many topics as you want.
- If you want to remove a topic, click or tap the X icon next to it.

Answering Questions

Click or tap the Answer icon. It’s the icon that resembles a pen and paper at the top of the page on a web browser or bottom of the page on the mobile app.

Check your “Questions for You.” If you’re not already on the “Questions for You” page, click Questions for You at the top of the menu on the left. This will display a list of questions related to the topics you added.

Click or tap Answer below a question. It’s the first option below each question.

Write out your answer. Type your answer. Make sure your information is correct and complete.

Click or tap Post . It’s in the lower-right corner on a web browser or in the upper-right corner on the mobile app. This posts your answer to the question.

Asking a Question

Click Add Question or tap + . If you are using a web browser, it’s the red button at the top of the page. If you are using the mobile app, tap the plus (+) sign in the upper-right corner. This opens the window that allows you to ask a question.

Type your Question. Your question should be a single sentence that starts with “What,” Why,” “How,” “Is,” etc.
- As you type, you will see a list of similar questions that other users have asked appear below your question. You can click one of those questions to view the answers.
- Alternatively, if you just want to post something, click or tap Create post at the top. You can use this option to just post your thoughts rather than asking a specific question.

Click Add question or tap Add . This post your question publicly. When people answer your question, you will receive a notification.

Using Spaces

Click or tap the Spaces icon. It’s the icon that resembles people at the top of the page on a web browser or bottom of the page in the mobile app. On a web browser, this displays a drop-down menu with the spaces you have followed. On the mobile app, it takes you to the “Spaces” page.

Click See all spaces (desktop only). This displays a list of spaces related to your topics.
- Alternatively, if you want to check a space you’ve already followed, you can click that in the list.

Click a space you want to check out. This displays the space along with all the questions and topics that have been discussed in that space.

Click Follow Space or tap Follow . It’s the button in the top-right corner. This follows the space and allows you to participate in it.

Post to the space. To post to a space you must be following it. Go to the page of a space you are following and click the bar that says Submit to [space name] . It’s at the top of the page in a web browser or bottom in the mobile app. Click or tap the Create post or Ask question tab at the top of the window. Write your post or ask your question and click or tap Submit .
- Click the “i” icon in the lower-right corner to view the rules for the space.

Checking Notifications

Click the Notifications icon. It’s the icon that resembles a bell notification. This displays all your notifications within the last 30 days.

Filter your notifications. If you are using a web browser, use the options in the menu to the left to filter your notifications. If you are using the mobile app, tap the icon that resembles slider bars in the upper-right corner. You can use the following options to filter your notifications:
- All notifications: This displays all your notifications. This is the default option.
- Stories: This shows notifications when someone answers your question with an anecdote or narrative rather than factual information.
- Questions: This shows notifications related to your questions, such as when someone answers a question or posts a reply to it.
- Spaces: This shows notifications for the spaces you follow.
- People updates: This shows notifications related to people you follow. To follow someone on Quora, click or tap Follow next to their username or on their profile.
- Comments and mentions: This shows notifications when someone comments on one of your posts or mentions you in a comment.
- Upvotes: This shows when you receive an upvote on one of your comments or answers.
- Your content: This shows notifications related to the content you post on Quora.
- Your profile: This shows notifications related to your profile.
- Announcements: This shows announcements from Quora.
- Earning: If you are part of one of Quora’s monetization programs, this shows notifications related to your earnings.
- Subscriptions: This shows notifications related to any paid subscriptions you are a part of.

Click a notification. This takes you to the page where the notification is from. You can read answers to your questions and comment on posts that have been made.

Go to the space you desire to ask a question, and click {{button|Say something}}. You'll get a space to write, and up the top, will be something which says {{button|Post}} with an arrow drop-down menu. Click on this, and you'll get the option to change the space post to a space question, so click {{button|Question}} and type in your question if you haven't done so already, then click {{button|Post}}.
