Are Monsters Real?

It depends on who you talk to—and on how you define “monster”! Most interpretations of the word refer to a frightening, threatening, fantastical creature, suggesting monsters are, by definition, imaginary. But there are cultures around the world that believe monster stories contain nuggets of truth.

For instance, you might associate vampires with Dracula or Nosferatu or Twilight , but in some rural Romanian villages, vampires are considered a legitimate threat. In fact, there exist vampire legends in over 98% of cultures worldwide, and it’s really only in the last century or so that these legends have died out, as technology and knowledge have advanced. Still, who’s to say vampires don’t exist?

In fact, according to a survey conducted by the New Orleans Vampire Association, over 5000 people in the United States self-identify as “vampires,” with some of them even claiming to feel physically unwell if they don’t regularly consume blood—consensually (calling into question the notion that monsters are inherently threatening or dangerous). Who’s to say they’re wrong? Many of these vampires are otherwise totally normal and unassuming members of society, and you’d never think that they’re secretly vampires.

At the end of the day, there’s a lot we still don’t understand about the way the world works, so even with all of our technological and scientific advancements, and with all of the knowledge we’ve accrued over the centuries, there could very well still be “monsters” hiding out there—or even walking among us.
