Introduction Set the tone for your speech. “Wow, thank you! I’m honored to receive this award! I have tons of people to thank but I’ll try to keep this short.” Organization Thank and mention the organization giving you the award. “First and foremost, I’d like to thank Equality E.D.U. for the incredible work that they do. I am grateful that this organization has given me the opportunity to touch the lives of so many children and families.” Issues Mention any causes that are related to the organization or the work that you did in order to win the award. Keep it short and upbeat, focusing on the good that’s come from the work you’ve done (rather than associated hardships). “With 12% of families currently below the poverty line, too many students are falling through the cracks. It’s a true joy to work with so many people who are putting their hearts into fixing the current education system.” Goals Mention and pay respect to the goals of the organization you represent. “Equality E.D.U. is doing important, priceless work to ensure children in poverty get the same shot at a good education. We have already met our goal of serving over 200 students this year and we aim to keep that number rising!” Benefactors Thank all of the people (or groups of people) that helped you along the way. “Thank you to Karen Waters and Doug Cole for their patience, having faith in my initiatives, and for working so hard to take this organization to the next level. Thank you, Jill Stone, for helping clarify my vision about each project. Thank you to the board of directors for nominating me and to thank the network of schools that allow us the time and space to connect with students. Inspiration Acknowledge and thank the people who have inspired you to work so hard. “I must recognize and thank the amazing teachers who volunteer their time. They inspire me every day to keep going, keep learning, and never forget the value of even one child’s education. And of, course, a big thank you to the students and families that we serve, who inspire me to work harder and be the best version of myself.” Gratitude Thank any other people or organizations that helped you succeed. “And I must thank all of the wonderful teachers in my life (who aren’t here) but have given me the courage to pursue this rewarding path. Last but certainly not least, thank all of you for being the backbone of this organization—we could not do this vital work without your support.” Optimistic ending End your speech on a positive, inspirational note in order to leave the audience feeling hopeful and empowered. “I’m excited to get back into the field and connect with as many students, parents, and teachers as possible. I am honored to lead the way toward educational equality in our community. Thank you all!”
